Jon Haegele on his win last Saturday at the New Egypt feature event

May 28, 2009

Jon Haegele

What a beautiful weekend for racing. Due to handicapping Jon and the Elite Air Systems, Valken Racing #61 was scheduled to start in the 7th spot in this past Saturdays’ feature event. The 61 looked like it was the only car to hit “the set-up”. I do not mean to offend any other drivers or crews but when certain cars are able to move through the field with what looks like ease I think it should be noted why. The answer is homework.

Back on track, Jon smoothly moved low to make it three wide at the start. All the cars in front of him drifted high and Jon was able to overtake enough cars on the first lap to put him in an excellent position for the win. Racing around to take lap three Jon had the 61’s Valken Wheels rolling in the 3rd position. Eying the leaders and sticking his line Jon walked by the 2nd place car in turn three of the fourth lap.

After strategically setting up the leader through turn one and two of the 5th lap, Jon was able to scoot by on the low side and pull away with the lead on lap 6. The laps ticked off as the crew held their breath and shouted unheard votes of confidence to their friend, sibling, son and driver as he cruised unrelenting into the turns with nothing but dust in front of him.

Laps 10, 11, and 12, each lap feels like an entire race when your car is winning. The caution flag flies for a car slowing on the back straight. Over the next few laps the caution continues to fly as the cars bunch up and allow threatening advances by drivers nearly as hungry as Jon. At this point the 5w of Pat Wall and the 91a of John Micek are knocking on the door.

I have a ton of confidence in our car and our driver so when you know how bad the driver wants to win and how good the car is, NOTHING will replace victory. So the green flag flies and Jon sticks the line, but moving up a bit to avoid the noticeable slick spots down low. An excellent portrayal of clean driving is what went on for the rest of the race.

Jon whipped the 61 across the line for our first win of the season which was dedicated to the late Jerry Simons, a friend, a sponsor and an all around great guy. A huge congratulations goes out to all our generous friends and sponsors.

So far this season we have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes and are obviously trying not to follow the numerical scale.

Overall it was a great weekend; Jon came from the 9th starting spot and went on to win the 8 lap qualifying heat race. The 61 Teo Pro car also took the Lightning Lap award for the second time this season which is a monetary award for the fastest lap in a heat race.

Team Carolina Registers for National Games!

May 27, 2009

Just a few years ago, the 12U Greenville storm won their first ever 2hot4Ice regional championship at SGAA in Snellvile, Georgia.

Those kids raised that championship trophy and did a victory lap aournd the rink in the same way you see pros hoist the Stanley Cup in the NHL! To these kids, it was the pinnacle of their young careers and was the start of something amazing.

Those memories are ingrained in their minds and it’s those types of moments that youth sports are all about!

They are not kids anymore and as seasons changed, so did the names: Some of the names worn proudly on their jerseys were the Carolina Kodiak’s, Grizzlies and now they are known as Team Carolina! In fact, we might have to add “…of the south” since there is another Team Carolina from the North of Carolina. We will talk about them soon…

For now, it is this core of kids who have been trained by some of the best teachers in the game! It is very obvious that these teams have been well coached and developed by their performance on the rink and at tournaments everywhere. This group has shared the rink with some of the BIGGEST NAMES in the game of Roller Hockey. Anyone heard of Dave Fromm (former Team USA “Gold Medal” Head Coach)? Or how about Itan Chavira!? This kid IS the Ovechkin of Roller Hockey today!

Today, the teams have been left in EXCELLENT HANDS in Gibson and Szabo. These two guys have not only taken over but have helped the players grow in even more levels.

When your watching hockey at Dreamsports on June 24-28, 2009 at the 2009 National Games, look for the Team Carolina 16Gold, 16Silver and 18U to make a loud statement heard and felt by everyone in Raleigh!

Not only will Team Carolina be on everyones radar at Nationals in about 28 days from today, but also watch for Valken Hockey! Check their site out now on www.valkenhockey.com.

At the VALKEN site, you will see what the next big thing in Roller Hockey looks like! Trust us, every player in the game will know who Valken is in a very, very short time. Their equipment, apparel and the entire brand is “KILLER!” You have to check these guys out!

Get the Lawn chairs and Hibachi ready because the ultimate Roller Hockey festival is coming to Raleigh, North Carolina on June 24-29, 2009.

The 2Hot4Ice National Games….

See you there…

Valken Modified Wheel - Racer Testimonials

Testimonial by John Willman, Racer and Owner of John Willman Motorsports. Wednesday, May 20th 2009

Valken Modified WheelJust wanted to let you know how happy I am with the performance and durability of the new Valken wheels. If you go to Gary Silverman’s Video website and look at the highlights from Big Diamond Speedway on May 8, 2009, the first thing you will see is my car taking a hard hit in the left rear wheel. The tire didn’t go flat even though the wheel was severely bent, I drove away from the accident and restarted the heat race. I ran a few laps not knowing the total damage the car had sustained. The left rear spindle and axle were bent and all the spindle bolts were broken. My crew fixed the car just in time for the consi and in the rush to get on the track, the bent wheel was put back on the car. I started at the rear of the consi and even though I had a vibration from the bent wheel, it never leaded and I qualified. The next day I dismounted the wheel and it had two v-shaped dents two inches long by one inch deep. I took a piece of bar stock and beat the wheel straight. The wheel did not crack or deform and I am still using this wheel. These wheels are everything your company says and more. Valken wheels are the only wheels I will stock and recommend to my customers.

See the video of this crash here.

Crossing the checkered flag on Valken wheels.

May 19, 2009

To say that Jamie Mills was hoping for a win at Delaware International Speedway’s “Mix and Match” event would be an understatement - instead, he was determined to get the win. But it didn’t come easy. Due to a crash between Jeff Brownell Jr. and Alan Johnson the race had to be stopped and then restarted, this is when Jamie Mills saw his opportunity. Even with his cars loss of power steering, Jamie was able to stick it out and cross the checkered flag to bring home the win!

Congratulations to Jamie Mills

Gunning for first as number 61…

Jon HaegeleLast weekend Team Valken sponsored racer Jon Haegele proved that he is becoming a reputable force in the world of dirt racing. Haegele was able to capture a third place victory while fending off a swarm of racers behind him. The other racers were clamoring to get their spot in the winners’ circle, but to no avail, they were simply shut out by Haegele (maybe they should have been rolling on the Valken Modified Wheel too).

Fifteen laps later, they finally ring the bell…

Team Valken’s David Bell brought home a first place victory after leading all fifteen laps of the GM Sportsman event last Saturday. It didn’t come easy, but this goes down as Bells first career win as a Team Valken dirt racer. Later, when talking about the race, Bell had this to say.

“I didn’t know what to expect, these guys were all professional racers and I knew that getting ahead of the pack wouldn’t be an easy thing to do.”

Not easy at all, but somehow Bell managed to outgun Doug Urbano at the drop of the green. “I pinned that sucker and the car just did the rest,” says Bell. Sounds simple enough, but Bell knew that winning this race was going to take more than just a great start. After leading for fifteen laps straight, Bell successfully managed to outmaneuver the race lapped traffic and bring home the first place victory for Team Valken!

Great finish and congratulations to Dave Bell on his first career win ever!

Racing is for Girls…

Team Valken Racing would like to congratulate Brittany Whitesall on her first place victory in the Rookie GM Sportsman event. Brittany managed to slingshot herself into first place on the second lap and she never looked back. A first place victory has never looked so good.

Coaches corner, Mission Cup Blog

May 18, 2009

The Valken Patriots participated in the “Mission Cup” this past weekend at Total Roller Hockey in Novi, MI. We competed with the big boys in the 18-u division. The favorite to win it all was Detroit Mission Stars Midgets, however, they got off to a bad start in their first game when the teams goalie went to the wrong rink for their game against the Red Devils. Needless to say they were not in a good mood when they faced their next opponent, which happened to be us. Well we surprised them with patience and very good team play, as we did throughout the tournament which is indicated in the scoring stats and we came out on top 6-3.

Our next opponent was the Red Devils, which had a few Team USA superstars on their roster. The Red Devils did not take kindly to being down by 3 goals against a bunch of 16 year olds and they began to get a “little” rough, to a tune of 54 minutes in penalties and 4 players with game misconducts. Needless to say the Valken Patriots persevered again with superior team play for a final score of 5-1.

Finishing off round robin play our next opponent was Detroit Mission Stars 16u. Not to take that team lightly, but we knew if we won by 4 goals or less, or lost or tied, we would face them in the Championship game rather than facing the Red Devils. So the players once again demonstrated outstanding puck possession and control and won the game 3 to 1.

In the Championship game the Valken Patriots were trying to force the play too much and too quickly in the first period and we only had a 1 to 0 lead entering the 2nd (last period). I told the boys to slow it down and not to force it, let the other team over commit and then take advantage of the odd man rush. I am happy to say they listened and we scored 3 quick goals. Unfortunately one of our own players redirected a pass into our own net, so our goalie did not get his shut out. Although we told him he actually did as the other team did not “technically” score on him, his own team-mate did. Final score 6-1.

The MVP of the tournament was Valken Patriot Ryan Alman.
The best goalie of the tournament was Valken Patriot Jamie Daniels with a .813 SV% and 1.50 GAA.
