“The Real Deal” Wins 10th Annual LOLMDS Bluegrass Classic at Bluegrass Speedway On Valken Wheels!

August 30, 2010

Bardstown, KY-August 28, 2010- The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series would make its annual visit to Bluegrass Speedway on Saturday evening for the 10th Annual Bluegrass Classic and Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN would lead all 50 laps en route to his second win in the Bluegrass Classic event, having previously won the race in 2003. Other feature winners for the evening included Shane Lafollette of Hodgenville, KY in UMP Street Stocks and Billy Meredith of Hodgenville, KY in WBRT 1320-AM UMP Sportsman.

Don O’Neal and Scott Bloomquist would bring the 26 car starting field to chief starter Brian Axsom’s green flag, with O’Neal jumping to the race lead, followed by Mike Marlar, Scott Bloomquist, Brady Smith, and Jimmy Owens. Bloomquist would take second on lap 2, while Steve Francis would make his way to fifth. Owens would work by around Francis for fifth on lap 4 as Marlar began to pressure Bloomquist for second. Marlar would take second from Bloomquist on lap 6 as O’Neal began to build a comfortable lead. Meanwhile, 13th starting Tim Isenberg was charging toward the front and would take fifth from Owens in a three-wide battle with Francis as well on lap 9. The first caution of the race would fly for a spin by Scott James on lap 11, wiping out O’Neal’s lead. The restart would see the upstart Isenberg go to third past Bloomquist, while 11th starting Brian Birkhofer would take the fifth position. With Marlar pressuring O’Neal for the lead, Bloomquist would challenge Isenberg for the third position and would take the spot on lap 16. Birkhofer’s charge was not yet done as he would drive around Isenberg for the fourth spot on lap 20 as the leaders began to work slower traffic. The second caution of the event waved on lap 22 when Eric Wells would roll to a stop on the backchute. Back underway, O’Neal and Marlar would continue to battle for the lead, while Isenberg would go back to fourth, only to the spot back to Birkhofer on lap 23. Brady Smith would work his way back into the top five after getting around Isenberg on lap 27, while O’Neal and Marlar were pulling away from Bloomquist. The third caution of the race waved on lap 34 when Isenberg would get sideways entering turn one and Francis would get collected in the melee as well. After a short red flag period to get the two tangled machines separated, action would resume with Marlar nipping at O’Neal’s heels for the lead, while Birkhofer would challenge Bloomquist for third. Caution would fly for the fourth time in the event on lap 38 when Dan Schlieper would make heavy contact with the turn three wall, ending his night. The restart would see Birkhofer get by Bloomquist for third off of turn two, while O’Neal and Marlar would again scoot away from the field. The final caution of the event flew on lap 43 when Tim Tungate’s mount would roll to a stop in turn two. The final restart would see O’Neal maintain the race lead and actually put a bit of distance back to Marlar to take the victory in the Independence Lumber/Superior Cleaning/Jones Core sponsored #71 MasterSbilt Race Car, Jay Dickens powered machine. Marlar, Birkhofer, Bloomquist, and Smith would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be 14th starting Ray Cook, Brad Neat, 15th starting Dale McDowell, Jimmy Owens, who would pit for a flat tire and go tail on the field on the lap 11 caution, and 23rd starting Earl Pearson, Jr.

In preliminary action, O’Neal would be the overall top qualifier at 14.772 seconds and win his heat, while other heat winners were Marlar, Bloomquist, and Smith. Scott James and Shane Clanton were B-Main winners, while series provisionals went to Pearson, Jr. and Schlieper, while track provisionals were Jeff Watson and Lee Devasier.

The 12 lap UMP Street Stock main event would see Shane Lafollette get by Mark Filiatreau around the mid-point of the event, with Lafollette holding off the charges of Scott Beeler to capture the feature event win in the division aboard the David Copley owned Advance Auto Parts/Larue Insurance/Geneva’s Florist and Gifts/K&K Flower Shop/Select Designs/Henry Miller #1 U.K. Fan sponsored #63 Ford Thunderbird. Beeler would take second, followed by Filiatreau, Fred Mercer, and Adam Burch. Heat race wins would go to Filiatreau and Beeler.

Billy Meredith would take the lead at the drop of the green flag on the 15 lap WBRT 1320-AM UMP Sportsman main event and would never lose the top spot on his way to his second win of the season in his Easy Trucking/Elite Auto Group/Parkway Service Center/Cabin Creek Farms sponsored #25 Chevy Monte Carlo. Robbie Settles would challenge Meredith late in the event, but would settle for second, followed by Roger Cecil, Avral Thompson, and Rob Jones. Heat race victories would fall to Meredith and Jones.

Danny Johnson Wins At CANANDAIGUA On Valken Wheels!

DANNY JOHNSON FINDS VICTORY LANE IN THRILLER; TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED NEXT SATURDAY

CANANDAIGUA, NY- It was a fight to the bitter end before “The Doctor” Danny Johnson completed the operation and won the action-packed 35 lap DIRTcar big block Modified feature besting Steve Paine by just 0.536 seconds last night at Canandaigua Speedway. This was Johnson’s first win in three years at the “Land of Legends” and by no means did it come easy. The four-time track champion took the lead on lap 13 with Steve Paine in tow, but during Paine’s multiple failed attempts to get by Johnson he would move back to a three car lead. After a lap 32 caution stacking up the field for a three lap shootout to decide the winner, Paine moved up beside Johnson on the inside lane as the banged nerf bars in turn 2 and all the way down the backstretch. Johnson was able to make some room as the pair hit again at the start finish line on lap 33 to keep a safe distance and take the checkered flag. Following the race, Paine showed his displeasure with Johnson’s driving style and hit the Rochester Americans/Honeoye Auto Parts sponsored car from the rear as they moved down the backstretch, causing a stir in the packed grandstands. Victory Lane was “electric” as fans made their way to the fence only to witness “The Doctor” thanking his sponsors and stating, “I guess someone had to teach him (Paine) a lesson” setting up a “sequel” next Saturday for Championship night. Charlie Donk, Justin Haers and Chad Homan rounded out the top 5.

Willy Decker Wins At Fulton On Valken Wheels!

FULTON, NY August 28, 2010 (By Dave Medler) – In one of the best Big Block Modified features of the year at Fulton Speedway, Willy Decker and Alan Johnson thrilled the fans with a battle that went right down to the checkers with Decker picking up the first ever win for car owner Ken Seya. A yellow with one lap to go was key for Decker as he was able to open a car length on Johnson to be the first under the checkers in his Commercial Roofing & Sheet Metal No.10 for the 0.444 second win.

Other winners on Syracuse.Com/ Carson’s Car Mart of Oswego were, Tim Sears Jr. SUNY Canton Sportsman, Tim Devendorf NAPA Late Models, Matt Emmons E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Skip DeGroff Gladiators.

Willy Decker got the jump on Tony Steiner to lead the opening lap of the 35 lap Big Block Modified feature on the second to last points paying night.

With 5 laps showing on the lap counter Decker had already built up a half a straightaway lead on the field. Behind Decker, Johnny Hill and Alan Johnson raced side by side for 2nd with Michael Storms and Tom Sears running a few lengths back in fourth and fifth.

By lap 10, Decker pulled out to a full straightaway lead running the bottom of the speedway. Johnson ran in 2nd as he tried to close the gap on Decker, Storms, Billy Decker and Larry Wight showed on the scoring tower.

On lap 11 the caution would fly for a spinning Tony Steiner erasing the big lead Decker had built up. Johnson would take advantage of the yellow as he was able to drive around Decker using the cushion to be shown as the new leader on lap-twelve.

With 15 laps completed you could have thrown a blanket over the top three of Johnson, Willy Decker and Billy Decker as they used every inch of the Fulton high banks. Just a car length back of the top-three was Storms and points leader Jimmy Phelps.

Decker still running the bottom was able to retake take the lead by inches over Johnson just before a yellow came out for Tim Fuller on lap seventeen.

After the final double file restart Johnson running the middle and the top reassumed the lead on lap 19 by feet over Decker. Phelps, Matt Sheppard and Billy Decker were within striking distance making it a five-way fight for the win.

When the starter gave the field the ten to go sign, Johnson and Decker still ran side by side for the lead with Sheppard and Phelps hounding the top-two for the victory.

Decker refused to give up on running the bottom of the speedway as he and Johnson ran side by side with Decker inching ahead using a back marker before the final caution on lap thirty-four. That final caution is just what Decker needed for the restart as he was able to outdistance Johnson at the checkers by a slim margin. Matt Sheppard, Jimmy Phelps and Billy Decker finished third through fifth.

“It’s been a very tough year for us, what a heck of a run. Alan Johnson, I seen Jimmy (Phelps ) in there for awhile looking at the board, Billy Decker , I can’t say enough this is great,” said a happy and relieved Willy Decker after his second Fulton Speedway Big Block Modified win.

“We came out strong in the hundred lapper here,” talking about the Series race back in April. “Seems like ever since then things have kind of gone downhill. Kenny (Seya) really pulled it together, got the new car we just put together, all these guys helped out, it’s great.”

“Alan (Johnson) is tough, you usually don’t see him up top, he’s usually at the bottom. It was great to run along side of him and never run into each other. It was just good close racing.”

In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Sean McCarthy would lead from lap 2 to lap 8 before Billy Clark Jr. would take over the top spot just before halfway. While Clark was running out front Tim Sears Jr. was working his way to the front from his 14th starting spot.

From lap 12 to lap 15 Sears hounded Clark before finally making his way into the lead on lap sixteen. Once in the lead, Sears survived a late yellow and late race charge from Billy Whittaker who was subbing for Sam Reakes IV to pick up the win. Sears also picked up the $100 SUNY Canton Hard Charger Award. Matt Hulsizer, Billy Clark Jr. and Ben Wheeler chased the top-two across the line.

In the green to checker NAPA Late Model feature it looked like Gus Schmidt was going to cruise to the easy win. Schmidt grabbed the lead from Jordan Keruskie on lap 8 and then took off from the rest of the field building up a full straightaway lead. Tim Devendorf moved into 2nd on lap 12 and started chipping away at Schmidt’s lead. On lap 18 Devendorf caught and passed Schmidt for the race lead. Schmidt took one last shot at the win on the final lap pulling even with Devendorf exiting turn four as the pair raced to the checkers in a photo finish. AMB scoring determined Devendorf the winner by 0.031 seconds. Jordan Keruskie, Dale Caswell and AJ Kingsley rounded out the top-five.

Matt Emmons took the lead from Bill Thomas on lap 4 of the 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature. Emmons then held off a late charge from Justin Thomson to pick up the narrow win. Scott Kline, Doug Cook and Bill Thomas finished third through fifth.

Skip DeGroff cruised to the easy 20 lap Gladiator feature as was never seriously challenged once in the lead. Jerry Herbert, Eric M Zirbel, Mark Johnston and Keith Zirbel chased DeGroff across the line.

This coming Saturday night September 4th 2010 Track Champions will be crowned. Andy Bachetti Captures King of the Track on Kenny Schrader Night

August 23, 2010

West Lebanon, NY: A wild and crazy night of racing on a special night that included a visit from NASCAR Veteran Kenny Schrader. VP Small Engine Fuel SEF 94 and Dougherty Brothers Construction presented the full night of racing action on the legendary high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway.

The 30 lap Big Block Modified feature with $4,000 to win on the line started off with Kyle Sheldon’s #518 and the #14 of Lorne Browe out in front of the field. Browe took off to the early lead and began to pull away. Back in the field the guest of honor, Kenny Schrader, piloting the #115S, was battling to stay in the top 5.

Caution flew on lap 7 for the #43 of Keith Flach spinning into the outside fence in turn 3 after contact deep in the field. The #518 of Sheldon got around Browe for the lead and started to edge away. Caution flew again on lap 14 of the Kokosa Oil Inc lap counter.

Sheldon powered out again but, the hard charging #34B of Andy Bachetti charged by on lap 15. Brett Hearn’s #20H was now hot on his heals after another caution slowed the field. But Bachetti had plenty in reserve to hold off Hearn in the closing laps.

At the checkers, the #34B captured the $4,000 checkered flag along with capturing the King of the Track series. Hearn crossed the line 2nd followed by J.R. Heffner, Donnie Corellis, and Matt Quinn. Kenny Schrader held on to finish 15th after his return to the Valley of Speed after nearly 20 years.

In the LV Sportsman division, their 20 lap feature started with Ryan Darcy and Danny Sanchez at the head of the class. Darcy jumper out to the early lead but it was short lived as the #25 of defending champ Frank Harper darted into the top spot by lap 7 and never looked back.

A late race challenge by the #16 of Kyle Hoffman came up a bit short, as Harper scores the win. Hoffman settled for 2nd followed by Jeff Watson, Kim Herrick, and Kolby Schroder to round out the top 5 finishers.

The 20 lap Pro Stock feature saw the #25J of Jeff Washburn and the #78 of Paul LaRochelle lead the field to green. But by the time lap 2 clicked on the Kokosa Oil In lap counter, the #324 of Jason Casey was out front.

Robbie Speed was following Casey in his tire track for the remainder of the event. As Casey scores the win with Speed right on his bumper for 2nd. 3rd was Jon Routhier, followed by Paul LaRochelle, and Chad Jeseo to complete the top 5.

The last feature of the night was the wild and exciting Budget Sportsman 20 lap event. At the front of the field was the #4NY of Robbie Speed and the #4 of Chris George. Several cautions plagued the beginning of the race with several incidents.

A brief incident on the front stretch under caution resulted in the #22 of Tim Hartman Jr being penalized and resulted in a DQ after making contact with the #18X of Bobby Knipe. Then a few laps later, another heated battle on the speedway resulted in contact under the caution between the #9M of Anthony Montessi and the #1H of Jason Herrington.

Montessi was also black flagged and penalized resulting in a DQ as well. Once racing finally got under way, it was Speed still out front but, not for long as the #14 of Scott Duel charged out front on lap 6.

But that lead was quickly erased as the #12C of Peter Carlotto took over the top spot on lap 8, and held on the remainder of the 20 laps. A late race challenge by Robbie Knipe was no match for Carlotto as he scored his first win of 2010. Knipe finished 2nd, followed by Scott Duell, Rob Barile, and Jake Jelley.

Earlier in the evening, Joey Morey scored the win in Pure Stock #1. Chris Gero took the checkers in Pure Stock #2, while James Hatch rallied to win Pure Stock #3.

STOKES BEATS THE HEAT AND COOLEY IN NeSMITH CHEVROLET DLMS MAG THRILLER

A physically spent Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS waves to an appreciative crowd on Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS after taking his first career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win in the 40-lap main event. Race time temperature was 102 degrees with a heat index of 118 degrees. (Brian McLeod Photo)

COLUMBUS, MS – Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS drove the TJC Mortgage/Maximum Signs and Graphics to his first career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series victory Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway in the 40-lap main event that was one of the most exciting, and hottest races in series history.

Race fans that braved triple digit temperatures were treated to three and four wide racing, as single file nose-to-tail competition was nowhere to be found on the 3/8-mile clay surface known as “Black Ice.” But that did nothing to chill the race time temperature of 102 degrees with a heat index of 118 degrees.

It was difficult for those that witnessed the event to keep up with all of the action that was as hot as the temperature. While the leaders raced three-wide, there was four-wide racing, and even seven-wide racing at one point, throughout the field.

Stokes held off the defending NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Champion and current point leader Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS driving the 78 Towing and Recovery Victory Circle by .196 seconds in a side-by-side finish.

Stokes took the lead on lap 28 after early race leader Justin McRee of Tuscaloosa, AL lost a driveshaft under his Century Dedicated, Inc. Trak-Star. “J-Mac” had a big lead before his misfortune, and was the only driver on the track not battling wheel-to-wheel for position. McRee was the obvious Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award recipient.

Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA ran up front all night long, and led for three laps early in the race driving the Turner Excavating DWB, before having to settle for third at the checkered flag. Stokes, Cooley and Turner spent most of the race battling three wide for second, and then for the lead after McRee dropped out.

Stokes ran the high side late in the race with Turner in the middle, and Cooley taking the short way around on the bottom of the track. Stokes and Cooley broke free of Turner with two laps to go, and Cooley began to try and set Stokes up for the “slide job” where he would dive to the bottom of the track and then slide up in front of Stokes.

Cooley made an unsuccessful try on lap 39, but he got a better run going down the backstretch on lap 40. Cooley dove to the inside, and appeared to have Stokes cleared coming off the fourth turn to the checkered flag. Stokes, however, had a lot of momentum coming off the high side of turn four, and stayed alongside Cooley down the front stretch.

Cooley had to slow his momentum just enough to keep from running into Stokes on his right, and that’s all Stokes needed to inch ahead at the start-finish line and take the win by less than a half a car-length.

“I’m about dead after three straight nights of racing, and traveling back and forth from Greenville to work on the track here,” an exhausted Stokes said after climbing out of his race car in Victory Lane. Stokes raced on Friday and Saturday nights in NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring action at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS, 150miles from “The Mag.”

The back-and-forth travel had to do with Stokes’ duties as the Magnolia Motor Speedway promoter and preparing the racing surface. “Dr. Dirt” prepared a race track that everyone liked, both those driving on it, and those watching from the grandstands.

Jamie Tollison of Kosciusko, MS took the fourth spot in the Tollison’s Auto Repair Trak-Star, and first heat race winner Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL was fifth in the Shaw Racing Trak-Star. The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Champion Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA drove the Bryson Motorsports Pro 1 by Brindle to a sixth-place finish.

Brindle was the fast qualifier with a lap in 15.864 seconds to earn the pole position for the main, while Cooley was the second quick qualifier, and started on the outside of the front row.

Second 12-lap heat race winner Chris Ragan of Ramer, TN was seventh in the Southeastern Ag Transport Trak-Star, and Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS started 17th and finish eighth in the Billy Riels Racing DWB to earn the GM Performance Parts Hard Charger Award.

Lee was also the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Race. Shay Knight of Ethelsville, MS finished ninth in the Dunn’s Autos Mastersbilt, and Rodney Wing of Meridian, MS rounded out the top ten in the G&M Trucking GRT.

The three and four-wide racing began at the drop of the green flag, as McRee and Turner came from the third and fourth starting spots respectively to take the lead and second positions respectively on lap one with Brindle, Cooley, and Wing following.

Turner got to the inside of McRee on lap two to take the lead, but McRee sailed back around the outside of Turner on lap five to take the point. Stokes raced his way from the seventh starting spot to move up to third by lap six. Stokes got to the inside of Turner on lap nine to take over the second spot.

The first of four caution flags came out on lap ten when Kevin Henderson of Cottondale, AL cut down a left rear tire on the Century Dedicated, Inc. Trak-Star. McRee led Stokes, Turner, Cooley, Tollison, Wing, Brindle, Knight, Shaw, and Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS in the B&M Salvage Rocket down for the restart. Stokes chose the inside for the “Delaware-Style” double file restart.

When the field went green, Cooley got under Turner for the third spot, but once Turner got wound up on the outside, he blew past Cooley to retake the position on lap 14, and drove around the outside of Stokes on lap 19 to take over the second spot. Stokes was up to the challenge, and he got back around Turner for second on lap 20.

McRee began to open up a lead over Stokes, Turner and Cooley, as they battled for the second spot. Just as the leader began to lap the cars on the tail of the lead lap, McRee’s teammate Charlie Henderson of Cottondale, AL spun his Century Dedicated, Inc. Mastersbilt in turn four on lap 24, right in front of McRee, who just missed a big crash.

The third caution flag came out on the restart when Minga spun in turn four, collecting the cars of Charlie Henderson, Chris McElhenney of Lake, MS in the G&M Trucking Trak-Star and Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS in the Lamar Auto Salvage Trak-Star. McRee led Stokes, Turner, Cooley, Shaw, Tollison, Wing, Knight and Ragan down for the restart.

This time, Stokes chose the outside for the double-file restart, and the three wide battle for second was on. McRee pulled away in the lead, but Stokes now powered on up high on the track with Turner in the middle groove, and Cooley made it a three-way dance by running on the bottom.

The three-wide battle for the second spot, suddenly became the battle for the lead on lap 27 when McRee slowed in turn three with the broken driveshaft to bring out the fourth and final caution flag. Now Stokes was out in front by himself for the double-file restart with 13 laps to go, and Turner chose the outside.

Behind the front trio, the action was also hot and heavy among the next seven drivers, who at one point before the caution flag came out were racing seven wide. Shaw lined up fourth followed by Knight, Brindle, Lee, Wing, Tollison, and Ragan. When green bulb flashed on, everybody from front to back in the field busted out three and four-wide.

Cooley got by Turner for the second spot, but that was just at the start finish line where cars are scored electronically on each lap. Stokes on the outside, Turner in the middle, and Cooley on the bottom swapped positions several times on each lap. With three laps to go, it was down to Stokes and Cooley to decide who was going to collect the $2,000 top prize.

On lap 49, Cooley had a run on Stokes going down the backstretch, but his momentum was slowed by a lapped car. Cooley reloaded for another shot on Stokes during the final lap of the race. He threw the slider on the leader in turns one and two, and it failed. Cooley still got another run on Stokes going down the backstretch.

As the lead duo entered turn three, Cooley dove under Stokes, passed him, and was about to attempt to slide up in front of him coming off the fourth turn. Stokes had enough head of steam coming off the high side of turn four to stay alongside Cooley as he slid up the race track, with Stokes just edging Cooley at the checkered flag.

Turner was entrenched in the third spot, but behind the leaders, the battle for fourth was just as intense as the battle for the lead. Tollison rallied from ninth to fourth in the closing laps of the race, followed by Shaw, Brindle, Ragan, Lee, Knight and Wing.
