The ‘Doctor’ Danny Johnson Carves up Eastern States 200 field to Take Orange County Fair Speedway Checkers

October 24, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY – October 23, 2011 – Danny Johnson was not to be denied in the 50th edition of the Eastern States 200 at Orange County Fair Speedway. Two red-flag periods, a bevy of cautions, and nearly 140-laps of work on his right-rear Hoosier tire would not stop Johnson from claiming the $20,000 top prize.
Johnson would inherit the lead from Justin Haers on lap 136 as the driver from Phelps, NY made his mandatory pit stop. Johnson would dominate the rest of the race to pick up his second Super DIRTcar Big-Block Series win of the season.
“This car and this crew were great today,” explained Johnson, who only trails Brett Hearn (8) in Eastern States 200 victories. “We had to pass a lot of cars today but we made it work and here we are.”
Orange County Fair Speedway regular Tim Hindley would bring the car home with a stout second place finish. “Those restarts towards the end were a little rough. The track was good for most of the race, but the top wasn’t there in 3 and 4 towards the end. We had a really good car though.”
Hindley also finished second to Johnson in the 2008 Eastern States 200. “We’ll get one of these. We just need to beat Danny.”
Danny Johnson started the Eastern States 200 from sixth starting spot and ran a conservative race early. A lap-65 caution for Jerry Higbie and Peter Britten tangling saw nearly half of the field make their mandatory pit stop. Johnson came out of the pits fifth of the cars that had pitted, but pitted the very next lap, restarting the race at the tail of the field.
“The original plan was to take fuel only,” explained Johnson. “The guys checked the tire and told me there was no way it was going to last another 140 laps so we came back in for a new tire.”
Johnson immediately started working towards the front using the outside to pass cars lap after lap. Johnson had worked his way into the top-5 by lap 115 with Andy Bachetti the only driver in front of him that had made the mandatory stop.
Bachetti appeared to be Johnson’s biggest threat, and was in position to win his first Eastern States 200, but his Steve Hough-owned #34 came to an abrupt stop in turn 3 on lap 120, ending his fantastic run.
With Bachetti out of the event, Gary Tomkins proved to be a threat, as he moved up behind Johnson and began challenging him for position.
When Justin Haers finally made his pit stop on lap 136, Tomkins found himself in second place with Johnson in front. It appeared as if Tomkins was the only car able to maintain the pace set by Johnson, but a late race right rear flat negated the fine run put in by Tomkins.
Johnson went on unchallenged until a caution on lap-198 saw the field bunch up for one last chance to steal the victory from Johnson. Billy Decker would restart to the outside of Johnson, but Johnson proved too strong, as he immediately opened up his lead and went onto the win.
Tim Hindley was able to take advantage of the late-race restart and passed Billy Decker for second. Decker would finish third, with his championship rival Matt Sheppard coming home fourth. Johnny Guarino, using a DIRTcar 500 Spec big-block motor came home in fifth.
Heavy impact with the outside wall, and then with Mike Ruggerio saw S.E.F. 200 winner Stewart Friesen complain of neck pain. The safety crew was quick to the scene and cut him out of the car and placed him on a backboard. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released with no serious injuries. The race was red flagged.
A second red flag came out when Jimmy Phelps, while running in the top-5, was turned on a restart resulting in a pile up that blocked the track. Tim Fuller, Danny Creeden, and Tommy Sears would all have their days end in the pile up.
Brett Hearn was running in third and appeared to have a car capable of winning his unprecedented ninth Eastern States 200 when mechanical problems ended his day on lap 85.
Clinton Mills, who nearly won the 2010 Eastern States 200, was involved in a scary flip after heavy contact with the first turn wall during one of two consolation races Sunday afternoon. He walked away without injury.
The two consolation races were won by Stewart Friesen and Mike Ruggerio.
The Super DIRTcar Big-Block Series will now head to the Dirt Track at Charlotte for The World Finals November 3-5. For more information, visit SuperDIRTcarSeries.com.

September 8, 2011

Friday, September 02, 2011 – Chad Brachmann of Sanborn, NY won the Mighty Taco Modified main AND HIS FIRST 358 MODIFIED TITLE at Ransomville Speedway!!!! Brachmann came from eleventh place to the point position on lap thirty-three and quickly pulled away from the field aboard the fifty lap main. Brachmann knew the only chance he had was to “win the race and let the chips fall where they may. This place is awesome,” said Brachmann in victory lane. “The track is consistent – the track management does a great job. It’s so awesome to win a title here and be in the same group as Bicknell, Burley ,and the Johnsons.”
Brachmann claimed his second win of the season aboard his Mighty Taco/Powertrip/FindItQuick.com sponsored #3 entry. Ryan Susice enjoyed his best finish of the season in second after leading much of the main. Scott Kerwin, Robbie Krull, and Todd Burley rounded out the top five. Burley secured second in points followed by Bicknell. Bicknell came into the event with an eight point advantage over Burley and fourteen points over Brachmann. Ortiz had crossed the line in third but was dis-qualified for a rules infraction.

Decker Wins & Friesen Takes Track Title at Utica-Rome Speedway

September 6, 2011

VERNON, NY-Despite a forecast that called for severe weather and 100% chance of rain, Utica-Rome Speedway was able to complete their entire program with Willy Decker racing off to grab his second win while Matt Janczuk taking another Sportsman victory. Rocky Warner and Tom Denton took the Pro Stocks feature wins while Ron Hawker and Bill Mason were lap victorious in the Pure Stocks on Gates-Cole Associates and Williams Fence night. Track champions were also crowned in the four weekly divisions. Shawn Donath took the popular win in the Empire Super Sprint 25 lap main event.
Todd Burley and Paul Kinney made up the front row of the Modified main event with Burley grabbing the lead for the opening circuit. Willy Decker, starting from the fourth spot, quickly made his move to the front as he was in the runner-up spot at the completion of lap one. Decker then disposed of Burley as he took command of the field as lap two was being scored.
Decker set a blistering pace as the leader, catching the back of the field by lap 12. Lapped traffic slowed Decker’s pace as green flag racing continued, allowing Burley and third place runner Bobby Varin to close the gap. With the crossed flags being shown to the field, Decker was the leader with Burley, Varin, Bill Trexler, Jr., and Stewart Friesen were following.
As the 30 lap main continued at a quick pace, Decker was still setting the pace out front with Burley still trying to close the gap with Varin in tow. Despite Decker having some issues with lapped traffic which allowed Burley and Varin to cut into Decker’s lead, they were unable to catch the leader. Decker would take his second win of the season with Burley, Varin, Friesen, and Alan Johnson chasing. The top ten spots were filled out by Trexler, Ronnie Johnson, Pat Ward, Paul Jensen, and Mike Mahaney. Friesen’s top five run was enough to secure his second consecutive Modified championship at Utica-Rome.
Jeff Leslie led the opening 13 circuits of the Sportsman 20 lap main event from his pole starting spot until he suddenly slowed and pulled off the racing surface. Matt Janczuk, who started deep in the field in the 14th spot, was stalking Leslie when he pulled off and inherited the lead with Leslie’s misfortune. Despite some heavy lapped traffic, Janczuk would go the rest of the way unchallenged to collect his fourth consecutive win and sixth overall. Janczuk was also crowned the Sportsman track champion, his first ever championship. Claude Hutchings, Jr., Jeremy Vunk, Chris Mackey, and Aaron Jacobs chased Janczuk across the line.
The Pro Stock feature from August 21 was run off the first feature of the night, restarting on lap one with Bret Belden grabbing the lead on the restart. Belden would hold on to the point until Rocky Warner slipped by on the seventh circuit. On lap nine, Mark Effner did what few drivers have been unable to do in 2011 and pass Warner for the lead. Effner would show the fast way around for the next seven circuits until Warner retook the lead. Warner would not give up the lead this time he ran off to score win number seven on the year. Effner, Glenn Forward, Belden, and Jeff Pastorella filled out the top five spots.
In the regularly scheduled Pro Stock main event, defending Pro Stock champion Tom Denton started on the pole and used it to his advantage as grabbed the lead at drop of the green. One yellow slowed the event on lap four, but it didn’t slow Denton as he again jumped out front on the restart and he would remain there as he ran off to his second win of the season. Pastorella, Effner, Ed Ostrander, and Bill Knapp rounded out the top five. Rocky Warner was crowned the 2011 Pro Stock track champion.
Chris Cunningham led the first 12 laps of the makeup August 21 feature event, first holding off the challenges of Dave Pope and then Ron Hawker. On lap 13, Hawker made his bid for the win stick as he took the top spot and ran off to the victory ahead of Cunningham, Pope, Rick Breed, and Phil Norman.
The nightcap Pure Stock feature event saw Bill Mason race to the lead from the outside front row and lead the first 13 circuits. Breed, who had been hounding Mason for several circuits, slipped underneath Mason to lead lap 14 but Mason was not giving up. Mason was again the leader as the duo raced out of turn two for the final time and down the backstretch. Coming off turn four for the checkered flag, Mason and Breed race to the line with Mason nosing Breed out for his first ever win. Breed, Hawker, Pope, and Frank Hyatt trailed at the checkered with Hawker taking the 2011 Pure Stock championship.

Scott James over Lanigan in Florence Slugfest

August 26, 2011

UNION, KY (July 23, 2011) – If the King Family, promoters of Florence Speedway wanted to sell more tickets to next month’s Sunoco Race Fuels North/South 100 then Saturday Night was a golden opportunity as Scott James of Lawrenceburg, In and Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY put on a terrific race-long battle for the lead that came down to the checkered flag with James sliding across the finish line and into the frontstretch retaining wall.

James took the lead for good from Lanigan on lap 45 of the 50 lap event which was billed as a “North-South Tune-up” and as the two exited turn four on the final lap the cars of Rod Conley and Bill Blair Jr. were directly in front of the duo as Lanigan pulled even with James, but James was able to get to the finish line first after contacting the back of Blair’s car which sent James headlong into the wall. James’ car had to be towed from victory lane.

The race-long battle between the two who grew up watching and eventually racing at the famed half-mile oval saw pole sitter Jesse Lay grabbed the lead at the start of the $5,000 to win main event, but Lay would only lead a lap until fellow front row starter James was able to seize the lead.

Lanigan, who was driving his nephew Terry’s Rocket no. 28 moved into second on lap three just ahead of Lay, Mike Jewell and Josh McGuire.

James and Lanigan then got the crowd fired up as the two would go on a race-long pace that was filled with slide jobs, paint-swapping and wall banging that kept everyone’s interest for all 50 circuits.

James and Lanigan would hit traffic by lap 15 which did not slow either one’s attempts at passing each other. As James got trapped behind a car on lap 21 Lanigan went to the inside of James heading into turn three and the two made heavy contact.

Lanigan would gain the lead as it took James a lap or two to make sure his car was going to make it the rest of the way. During this time Jewell would close quickly on James and pressure him for second.

The top three would pull away from the rest of the field and run nose-to-tail with 28 laps scored. Then two laps later James would power to the lead around Lanigan, but a caution flag would negate the pass for the top spot.

On the restart Lanigan would remain on the point and for the rest of the race good hard racing would continue. James would throw a slider on Lanigan twice in the next five circuits after the race went green, but each time Lanigan would fight back and regain the point.

James then stalked Lanigan as James would throw another slide job in turn four on lap 45 on Lanigan and that would end up being the winning pass.

“I didn’t know he was there,” said James of the contact between the two on lap 21. “I was behind (Tim) Prince and I thought I was low enough to pass him, and there comes Darrell, he hit me pretty good, I thought I broke a shock or something, it took me a couple of laps to regain my thoughts,” said the 39-year-old second generation racer.

After the race the two exchanged handshakes at the scales, “he apologized to me afterwards and that’s good enough for me, I think I had a harder left rear tire on, the track was fast up high, I thought when I cleared him that one time, I had him, but then he came back and re-passed me, and with five to go, I thought it was time to go, I had enough patience there to get back by him,” said James.

“My Lucas Oil experience has helped me over the years,” said the winner commenting on the five years he spent racing on the tour, “the Lucas Oil racing and the Summernationals this year you have to learn to be patient, I have to thank Scott Riggs, without him, I wouldn’t be able to race, we are having a pretty good year, to come here in a couple of weeks and win the North/South would be the highlight of my career, no doubt about it.”

Lanigan, who settled for second said it was just some good old hard racing. “I got into him there early on, I had a run down the back stretch, he didn’t know I was there and I came down there and jumped over his left front tire, that wasn’t the way I wanted to pass him, he had a good car, probably the best one out there,” said the 41-year-old driver, who like James will be searching for his first career North/South 100 win in a few weeks.

It was James’ third overall win of 2011 in the Riggs Motorsports, Clearwave Communications, Valken Wheels, VP Fuels, Integra Racing Shocks, Murphy Motorsports, JFRGraphics.com, Jay (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)ens Racing Engines, Rocket Chevrolet.

Trailing the two frontrunners were Hoosier-state drivers Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN in the Southern Indiana Rock Drilling, Cornett-powered MasterSbilt and fast qualifier John Gill of Mitchell, IN in the Terry Eaglin-owned RJE Wholesale Fertilizer Rocket Chassis. Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY finished fifth in the Red Buck Cigars, Cornett-powered Longhorn Chassis. Neat was the hard charger of the race passing eleven cars after starting 16th.

Completing the top ten were Josh Williams of West Harrison, IN; Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY; Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, IN; Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, WV, and Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN.

Florence North-South Tune-up Finish: Scott James, Darrell Lanigan, Mike Jewell, John Gill, Brad Neat, Josh Williams, Dustin Neat, Jason Jameson, Eddie Carrier Jr., Greg Johnson, Steve Casebolt, Chad Smith, Rod Conley, Bill Blair Jr., Jeff Alsip, Jim Price, Kent Robinson, Tim Prince, Jerry Rice, Steve Landrum, David Spille, Josh McGuire, Jesse Lay, Duane Chamberlain, Cody Mahoney

Andy Bachetti Wins Battle to the Front

August 23, 2011

With the points season winding down at the legendary high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway, every position and every point is becoming more and more critical.  In the Modifieds, Andy Bachetti took full advantage of others issues to score the win and maximum points.

Bobby Hackel IV powered past Tim Hartman Jr in the closing laps to cross the line 1st in the unofficial Budget Sportsman finish, while Frank Harper survives mayhem to finish 1st in the unofficial LV Sportsman finish.  Jon Routhier scores his 1st win in the ProStocks, Chris Gero, Richard Puff, and Phil Wood scores wins in the Purestocks.  Andy Bachetti also took the $1,000 AIM Shootout as well.

It’s coming down to crunch time in all divisions at the Valley of Speed, as the number weeks left in the points season are numbered, making every lap critical in determining a good season, or a great season.

The marquee feature event, big block modifieds, hit the high banks for their 30 lap shoot out.  J.C. Flach bolted out to the early lead.  The yellow flew early and often keeping the field under normal cruising speed.  The 77J jumped out again to the lead, but the yellow flew again on lap 3, this time for point leader Brett Hearn.

Hearn’s night came to an early night with a snapped rear axle.  That gave the rest of the point contenders an opportunity to make up some ground.  As the green flew again, Flach was out front and getting comfortable.  Keith Flach was right on the #77J for most of the event until lap 24 when the #43 lost the handle and began to fade, then the leader lost the handle and began to fade handing the lead to the #34B of Andy Bachetti.

Hot on Bachetti’s heals was the 12 time champ Kenny Tremont Jr as he set his sights on taking maximum points.  But Bachetti had too much, and the final laps on the Kokosa Oil Lap count clicked away.  At the checkers, it was Bachetti and Tremont finishing 1st and 2nd.  J.R. Heffner battled to finish 3rd, Keith Flach came back to finish 4th while Donnie Corellis held on for 5th.

The 33 car Budget Sportsman feature was jam packed full of wheel to wheel action.  At the green, the #21 of Ryan Darcy jumped out front and was the safest place to be as back in the field it was a melee for position.

With so much racing action, the focused stayed up front with Darcy holding off the #72 of Ray Hall Jr.  A few cautions slowed the field, but it was the same story up front until lap 15, as the handle began to fade on the front runners, and left to door open for the #97 of Bobby Hackel IV.

Hackel jumped out front and easily pulled away from the field.  At the line, Hackel crossed the line 1st with Tim Hartman Jr battling to cross the line 2nd, Ryan Darcy had to settle for 3rd while Ray Hall Jr and Robbie Knipe rounded out the top 5 of the unofficial finish at press time.

The LV Sportsman 20 lap shootout was more like a survival match than a feature event.  By the end of the event, there were only 8 cars running as attrition and wrecks dwindled the field.   At the checkers, Frank Harper crossed the line 1st followed by Steve Meilleur, Dylan Gibson, Kevin Petrucci, and Kim Herrick to complete the top 5 finishers of the unofficial finish at press time.

The Pro Stocks were just another door to door battle that the fans have come to expect each week.  The #84P of D.T. Pickard was out front early, but it didn’t take long for the #315 of Jon Routhier to take the top spot away and power away for a solid hold up front.

Cautions again slowed the field on multiple occasions, but Routhier wanted that win, bad.  All the contenders had to go through the #315 to get it.  But there was no one that had enough to dethrone the #315, and Jon Routhier scores his first win.

Robbie Speed had to settle for 2nd with Paul LaRochelle, Victor Hopkins, and Jason Casey to round out the top 5.

In the Purestocks, Chris Gero took PS#1 , Richard Puff scored the win is PS#2, and Phil Wood topped the field in PS#3.  For the full results, visit our website and click on Results.

Ronnie Johnson Crowned Champion at Fonda

Ronnie Johnson Crowned Champion at Fonda

Ronnie Johnson Crowned Champion at Fonda

FONDA – Bobby Varin has won five of the last six modified track championships at Fonda Speedway and entering Saturday’s Night of Features held a one-point margin over Ronnie Johnson in the race for his seventh career track championship.

Johnson asked his father, 11-time track champion Jack Johnson, for some advice before the night’s racing began. Jack simply said, “Just go win.”

Johnson, driving the car that was purchased for his father to run two years ago, took a five-point lead with a fifth place finish in the opening 33-lap feature, while Varin crossed the line eighth.

When first feature winner Danny Varin drew to invert 10 cars, Bobby Varin started on the inside of the second row with Johnson on the outside of row three in the second feature.

“We went to work on the car to get it right because we knew that fifth wasn’t going to cut it with Bobby starting third,” Johnson said.

When the caution flew on the second lap of the second feature, Johnson and Varin restarted side-by-side in the second row.

Johnson got the break he needed when Varin got held up behind Jeremy Wilder on the restart and Johnson followed Jimmy Davis to the front. A lap later, Johnson powered his way between Davis and the fourth-turn wall to take the lead.

Running the final 30 laps caution free, Johnson extended his advantage to half a track to pick up his fifth win of the season, 20th of his career and first modified track championship.

Also locking up track championships Saturday were Mark Mortensen (602 limited sportsman), Rocky Warner (pro stock), Cassidy Wilson (street stock) and Ben Righi (4 cylinder).

Picking up feature wins on the night were Danny Varin and Johnson in the modifieds, while Mortensen and Doug Flynn won the twin 20-lap sportsman features. Warner and Ivan Joslin picked up the pro stock division victories, while Dave Horning Sr. and Wilson won the street stock main events. Ken Hollenbeck won the night’s 4-cylinder feature.

Dave Lape and Dustin Delaney won the modified B-mains, while David Constantino and Dan Santabarbara picked up the 602 sportsman B-main victories.

Josh Hohenforst led the opening 33-lap modified feature until a series of cautions and restarts on lap eight allowed Mark Kislowski to take the point. Danny Varin followed through into second. Kislowski and Varin battled side-by-side for six laps swapping spots multiple times a lap before Varin was able to secure the lead.

Meanwhile, the race-within-the-race between Johnson and Bobby Varin was heating up as Varin and Johnson were never separated by more than two spots the entire event.

At the finish, it was Danny Varin picking up his second career modified win with Kislowski hold off Matt DeLorenzo for second. Ryan Odasz placed third with Johnson fifth. Elmo Reckner, Alton Palmer Bobby Varin, Jimmy Davis and Jeremy Wilder completed the top 10. Danny Varin drew the No. 10 inversion chip on victory lane, putting Wilder and Davis on the front row and Bobby Varin and Palmer in the second.

Johnson’s move off turn four on lap three was enough to help him break away from the field and allowed him to pick his way through lapped traffic, while Bobby Varin moved into second at the midway point but was hoping for a caution as Johnson was a half-track ahead. The caution never came and Johnson secured his first modified track championship by a nine point margin.

Danny Varin was third followed by Davis, Reckner, Wilder, Odasz, Palmer, DeLorenzo and Kislowski.

Mortensen wrapped up his first 602 limited sportsman championship is winning fashion, capturing the opening 20-lap feature to extend his point lead to 44 points over John Scarborough. Mortensen needed to take the green in the second feature to lock up the title. He did and finished 16th in the second feature.

Flynn survived a late-race restart to pick up his first career victory over Robert Bublak, Scarborough, Adam McAuliffe and Cody Bleau.

Korey Wilder placed second in the opening 20-lap feature with Ray Zemken third, Scarborough fourth and Justin Auspelmyer fifth.

Warner also took a giant step toward his first pro stock championship by capturing the opening 15-lap feature. Warner took over the lead from early-race leader Kim Duell on lap six and never looked back.

Pete Broderson got up for second with Duell third and Kenny Gates, who entered the night six-points behind Warner in the standing, fourth and Rob Yetman fifth.

Joslin took command of the second 15-lap feature at the drop of the green and turned back all challengers as he raced to his first win of the season and second of his career. Warner finished second followed by Broderson, Kenny Martin and Dean Charbonneau.

Horning took the lead from Chuck McSpirit on the third lap of the opening 10-lap street stock feature and held off a late-race charge from Wilson to pick up his second win of the season and 30th of his street stock career.

The victory moves him ahead of Bob VanAernam into second on the all-time wins list 21 wins benind Dave Horning Jr.

Greg Havlicek led the second street stock feature for the opening three laps before McSpirit slipped past on lap four. Havlicek regained the point on lap five before McSpirit grabbed the lead on lap six.

Wilson took over on a lap seven restart and was never headed as he won for the fifth time this season. McSpirit was second followed by Rob VanAernam, Randy Cosselman and Luke Horning.

Fonda Speedway will host a regular card of racing plus the CRSA 305 Sprints next Saturday before shutting down until Sept. 17 for the annual Montgomery County Fair.

(By Dave Medler)
Ryan Phelps out raced Paul Kinney and the rest of the 27 car starting field to lead the opening lap of the 50 lap “Thunder On The Thruway” series race for Big Block Modifieds on the slick but multi-grooved Utica-Rome Speedway surface.
Phelps would lead the first 16 laps till a caution came out to bunch the field up. On the restart Bill Trexler Jr. took advantage of the outside as he blasted by Phelps and into the lead.
At the halfway point Trexler still led, but he had to contend with Billy Decker who had moved into 2nd and was putting pressure on the leader. Behind the top-two, Matt Sheppard, Ryan Phelps and Bobby Varin raced for third through fifth.

Decker hounded Trexler for the next few laps finally getting by on lap 30 to be scored the new leader of the race.
Once out front, Decker was the class of the field as he drove away for a 3.479 second win over Trexler at the checkers. Bobby Varin, Stewart Friesen and Pat Ward rounded out the top-five.
Early leader Ryan Phelps, Todd Burley, Chris Busta, Jim Davis and Willy Decker completed the top-ten.
“The car was awesome tonight, that was a lot of fun,” said Decker from victory lane.” He (Trexler) drove a heck of a race, but he got bottled up in traffic that was the difference, so we got away with one tonight.”
Decker related that he couldn’t thank his crew enough as they not only had to get his modified ready but also had to fix his Late Model that he tore up the night before at Fonda Speedways Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series race.
