Brewerton Gets 10th Different Winner as Chuck Bower Takes the Checkers!

July 8, 2011

And the streak continues at the Brewerton Speedway as Chuck Bower out of Lansing, NY became the tenth different winner in ten Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified features run in the 2011 season at the Brewerton Speedway. Bower grabbed the lead at the drop of the green of the 35 lap feature and dominated till a late yellow with 3 laps to go to bunch the field up. Over the final laps Bower pulled away from current point’s leader Stewart Friesen for his first win since the 2004 season.

Other winners on Chandler Automotive Night were, Kevan Cook Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Jeff Isabell Sr. Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk made it two in a row in the Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Chuck Bower and Chad Phelps led the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified field down to Dave Farney’s green flag with Bower gaining the early advantage in the 35 lap feature.

With 10 laps complete, Bower built up a ten car length advantage over Ted Lamb with Chad Phelps running alone in 3rd and Ryan Phelps and Dan Vauter fighting for top-five spots.

By lap 15 Bower led by a half a straightaway running the cushion as Lamb tried to keep the leader in sight. Chad Phelps and Ryan Phelps ran nose to tail and side by side for 3rd with point leader Stewart Friesen now in the top-five.

On lap 20 Bower was still setting a quick pace as he started catching back markers with trying to close in a Bower started putting cars a lap down. Behind the top-two, Ryan Phelps, Friesen and Chad Phelps in his new Troyer showed on the scoring tower.

With 10 laps to go Bower was still on rails building up a full straightaway lead and looked to be heading for the win when a yellow he didn’t want to see flew with 3 laps to go putting current point leader Friesen on Bowers back bumper.

Over the final laps Bower wasn’t going to be denied as he pulled away from Friesen for his first Brewerton win since the 2004 season. Stewart Friesen, Matt Sheppard, Ted Lamb and Ryan Phelps rounded out the top-five.

“I’ve been around sports my whole life, from playing them as a kid, from teaching them as a coach, to watching them and you never give up. I know I can do this stuff, “ said a relieved and excited Chuck Bower after doing a roof dance on his mainly self-financed, Ingles Performance, No.99B.

“We just keep digging; I knew this car wasn’t good, we couldn’t get a handle on the tires. One got away from us last week. My left front is flat, but it was meant to be tonight. I’ve lost a lot of races in lapped traffic. I kept digging, I didn’t know what was going to happen at the end,” Bower talking about the late yellow that erased his big lead. “The field is like we talked, the best in the business. I could go anywhere on Friday night and Saturday night. I’d rather race against the best and win against the best.”

In the 20 lap Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified Feature “Domination” was the word for Kevan Cook. Cook took the lead on lap 3 and was never challenged winning by almost a half a track at the checkers. Ryan Scott, Brandon Carvey, Mike Jeffries and Josh Van Tassell rounded out the top-five.

Jeff Isabell Sr. and Joe Isabell were in the show in the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite Feature. The Father and Son fought for the win over the entire second half of the feature with Jeff picking up the narrow win over Joe. Dough Williams, Tim Devendorf and Andrew Schartner finished third through fifth.

Chuck Powelczyk wasn’t going to be denied in the 15 lap Metalico Four Cylinder Super Stock Feature. After taking the lead on lap 2 from his 10th starting spot, eight-time feature winner Stephen Denton took the lead away from Powelczyk in heavy traffic with one lap to go. Powelczyk used the same lapped traffic to bottle up Denton and retake the lead and the narrow win over Denton. Scott Rothwell, Keith Shay and Wendall Washington chased the top-two across the line.

The Doctor Takes Battle of the Border Cash at Ransomville Speedway

July 7, 2011

Friday, July 01, 2011 – The Ransomville Speedway management welcomed in the month of July in successful fashion as a packed house enjoyed plenty of hot racing action as ninety entries filled the pit area last Friday night. At stake? – Five large G’s as the 2nd annual Battle at the Border took center stage. The second highest car count of the season provided plenty of racing action through-out the four divisions of Modifieds, Sportsman, Streetstocks, and 4 Bangers.
Danny Johnson of Rochester, NY invaded the Big R and performed surgery on the Mighty Taco Modified field. Taking the lead away from Pete Bicknell on lap 49, the Doctor went on to win his second Battle at the Border 75. Johnson collected the very popular win piloting his Waste Management/Honeoye Auto Parts sponsored 27j. Chad Brachmann came from the twelth starting position to second. Brachmann challenged Johnson on lap sixty giving cause for pause as the pair made contact on the front stretch. Johnson would maintain the top spot while Brachmann came home in second. Bicknell held on for third followed by Timmy McCreadie and Scott Kerwin. Kerwin had started on the pole and led the first five circuits.

Justin Wright visited victory lane for the first time in 2011 aboard the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman division. Wright took the lead away from Mike Williams with just a few laps remaining in the twenty-five lap main event. Wright and Williams put on a show that just might go down as the best of the season as they battled side by side through the final seven circuits. In the end it was Wright in for the win followed by Williams, Don Spatorico, Mark Chiddy, and James Henry. Jesse Cotriss had originally finished in third but was disqualified for not conforming to the rules as written.

Jaren Israel of Wilson, NY captured the win aboard the twenty lap Ki-Po Chevrolet Streetstock main event. Israel ran fourth with a few laps remaining and looked to be out of contention for the win. However, as lady luck would have it – contact between the front two of Kyle Wendt and Derrick Borkenhagen opened the door for Israel. Israel rocketed to the front and never looked back as he held Borkenhagen off for the win. Borkenhagen came home in second followed by Chris Burek, Billy Coleman, and Ken Washburn.

Don Moulden of Burt, NY took top honors aboard the Gippsters Collision 4 Bangers twelve lap main event. As the field came down for the checkered flag, current leader Mike Kramarz had a pwer plant let go giving the lead to Moulden. Moulden was certainly in the right place at the right time as he cruised the final distance to collect his second win of the season. Kramarz drifted to the line for second followed by Marika Morris, Gordon Gau, and Joey Zimmerman. Morris had led the early going prior to losing the top spot to Kramarz. The event was caution filled as the concrete wall acted like a magnet.

Decker Dominates at Fulton!

July 6, 2011

Billy Decker started twelfth in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway.  It only took Decker 15 laps to work his forward and take the lead from Chad Phelps. Once in the lead Decker flexed his muscles as he drove away from the field winning by over seven-seconds in the green to checkers race. With his victory, Decker is now the new point leader over defending track champion Jimmy Phelps.

Other winners on Bombadil’s Tavern, Dig Safely New York Night were, Tim Sears Jr. in the SUNY Canton Sportsman and NAPA Late Models, CJ Castelletti E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Joe Isabell Mod Lites and Jerry Herbert Four Cylinder Stocks.

Chuck Bower raced out to the early lead in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature. Bower’s lead was short lived as Chad Phelps using the extreme bottom of the speedway was scored the new leader on the third-lap.

With 10 laps complete Phelps and Bower still showed at the front of the pack, but the fastest car on the track was Billy Decker who had already moved from twelfth and into third spot. Mike Mahaney, Larry Wight and Jimmy Phelps were in a tight battle for top-five spots.

By lap 13 Decker ran down and passed Bower for the runner-up spot. Just two- laps later being hooked up on the top of the track, Decker blasted around Phelps and into the lead.

At the halfway point Decker was starting to pull away as Phelps still ran in second, Bower, Mahaney and Wight still showed in the top-five.

With 10 laps to go Decker was still a rocket putting cars a lap down in rapid fashion while leading by over a full straightaway. Phelps still ran in second, with Bower, Mahaney and Wight still solidly in the top-five.

Over the remaining laps and no yellows to slow the field down, Decker just kept getting quicker winning by a half a track at the finish. The official margin of victory was by 7.508 seconds. Chad Phelps, Mike Mahaney, Larry Wight and Chuck Bower rounded out the top-five.

“We made huge gains in our engine program. Kevin Lamphere and the L J L racing engines are doing a great job. It’s made the difference,” Billy Decker said about his dominating win and the improvement between last season and this season. Decker leads the Fulton Speedway points plus the Super DIRTcar Series and Race Of Champions points.

When asked about his dominating win tonight behind the wheel of his Gypsum Wholesalers, Stadium International Trucks, Integra Racing Shocks, No.91, Bicknell, Decker said, “Scott (Jeffries) and the guys have been working on some stuff. We even learned some stuff from Lightning Larry (Wight) and what he done last week,” Wight won the Big Block Modified Feature at the New Cayuga County Speedway over Matt Sheppard. “We took some of the stuff he was doing and applied it to our race car and it paid dividends tonight.”

In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman Feature, Michael Teachout, Stewart Garrison and Jordan Bennett all led in the first 13 laps. The class of the field was Tim Sears Jr.. Sears started sixteenth took the lead from Bennett on lap 14 and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way for his second win of the season. Jordan Bennett, Jeremy Pitcher, Greg Mrzywka and Greg Kimball rounded out the top-five.

Gus Schmidt and Dale Caswell led laps in the opening 5 laps of the 20 lap NAPA Late Model Feature. Just like the Sportsman Feature Tim Sears Jr. was the car to beat. Sears took the lead on lap 6 then winning by 2.162 seconds at the checkers over Sean Beardsley. Dale Caswell, Larry Wight and Bodie Bellinger finished third through fifth.

At the beginning of the season CJ Castelletti had never sat behind the wheel of an open wheel car and struggled. What a difference a few weeks makes behind the wheel as Castelletti picked up his first ever E&V Energy Novice Sportsman victory. Scott Ford, Ricky Donovan, Kyle DeMetro and Jim Graham chased Castelletti across the line.

Joe Isabell led every lap of the 12 lap Mod Lite Feature as he out distanced Clayton Brewer III, Justin Crisafulli, Justin Williams, Sam Usborne, Rick Demo, Jamie King and Frank Sobotka.

In the Four Cylinder Stocks Jerry Herbert was the class of the field picking up his third win of the season and maintaining his point lead. Keith Zirbel, Jeff Warner, Skip DeGroff and Eric M Zirbel rounded out the top-five.

Willy Decker grabs popular win at Utica-Rome

July 5, 2011

VERNON, NY- Another packed grandstand watched another action filled night of racing at Utica-Rome Speedway on Safelite Auto Glass night. The crowd was treated to a late race pass for the win in the Empire Super Sprints as Chuck Hebing took the popular win. Local favorite Willy Decker was the victor in the Modifieds while another popular local driver, Steve Way, took the Sportsman win. Rocky Warner was big winner in the Pro Stocks while Ricky Breed took the Pure Stock checkered flag.
Front row starters Paul Jensen and Chris Busta led the 26 car Modified field to the green flag with Jensen jumping out front with Steve Hulsizer, Mark Kislowski, Casey Williams, and Jason Rood in tow with Hulsizer taking over the lead a circuit later. Hulsizer’s stint out front also only lasted one lap as fifth place starter Kislowski took over the lead. Kislowski steadily began to pull away as the field battled for position on the spacious Vernon oval behind him. Willy Decker was the driver on the march as he quickly moved from his ninth starting spot and into the top five with three laps complete. By lap five, Decker was up to third and looking for more as grabbed second from Hulsizer on lap seven. With ten complete, the leader board showed Kislowski leading with a fast closing Decker in second, Hulsizer in third, Pat Ward in fourth, and Williams in fifth. 18th place starter Stewart Friesen was sixth over Todd Burley, Jensen, Bill Trexler Jr., and Ronnie Johnson rounding out the top ten.
Decker continued his charge as he caught Kislowski and executed the pass for the lead to take the lead as lap 12 went into the books. From that point on, Decker drove away from the field and with green flag racing prevailing that left Kislowski in the grips of the hungry field behind him. Hulsizer continued strong run in the third spot at this point with Ward, Friesen, and Todd Burley all dicing for position. With 10 laps remaining, positions throughout the top ten continued to change as Decker continued to dominate out front. Kislowski was still in the runner-up with Ward, Friesen, Burley, Hulsizer, Bobby Varin, Williams, Jensen, and Johnson chasing.
A heated battle raged on for the second spot as Kislowski, Ward, Friesen, and Burley fought for the podium finish. Burley made a late race move from fourth to second with a lap remaining but Decker was way out front at this point and raced off to the win. Burley come across the line in second followed by Kislowski, Ward, Friesen, Varin, Hulsizer, Williams, Alan Johnson, and Jensen filling out the top ten spots. It was Decker’s 17th career win at Utica-Rome Speedway and his first since August 2009.
When the green flag dropped to begin the 20 lap Sportsman feature, Craig Pope jumped out to the lead from the outside of the front row and immediately opened a large lead over the rest of the field. As Pope set a torrid pace out front, some of the top drivers in the division began to make their usual march to the front as Steve Way from 13th, Jeff Leslie from 15th, and Matt Janczuk were making tracks to the front. Way was the first to make his presence felt as he slipped by Heath Carney and into second on lap nine. Pope had hit lapped traffic at this point which allowed Way to begin to reel him in. With five laps remaining, Way had caught Pope and began to pressure him for the top spot. As lap 19 went into the books, Way was finally able to clear Pope for the lead and race off to the win. Pope came across the line in second with Janczuk, Leslie, and Chris Mackey rounding out the top five spots.
Dave Moyer took the initial lead in the 20 lap Pro Stock main from his outside front row starting spot in search of his first win of the season. While Moyer held down the lead, Tom Denton and Glenn Forward were battling for the second spot with Denton holding it until he slipped off the top of turn three and four, losing many positions. At the halfway point, Moyer was still up front with Chris Carr and 12th place starter Rocky Warner beginning to make their presence felt. On lap 11, Warner made his bid for the lead stick as took over the lead. As the laps wound down, Denton recovered from his early race miscue and took second from Carr on lap 15, looking for one more pass. Denton’s charge would fall just short however as Warner took the win by just a few feet with Carr in third. Bret Belden and Moyer rounded out the top five.
Frank Hyatt led the first seven laps of the Pure Stock 15 lap feature before Ricky Breed would take over the top spot. Breed would hold off the challenges of Dave Pope and Ron Hawker to take the win. Hawker, Pope, Hyatt, and Bill Mason rounded out the top five.
Please see the official Empire Super Sprint release for complete details on the exciting ESS event.

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – June 21, 2011 – For the second consecutive race, Billy Decker parked his Big-Block Modified in victory lane on the Super DIRTcar Series trail after winning “The Big Show III” Tuesday night at Orange County Fair Speedway. (Mike Petrucci Photo)

Decker used a lap-40 restart to his advantage, using the outside line to sweep around then-leader Tim Fuller. From there, there was no looking back, as Decker survived multiple late race restarts to collect his second win in the Brett Hearn promoted Big Show series. “I really like taking home Brett Hearn’s money,” claimed an elated Decker in victory lane. “The Gypsum Race Team did an awesome job again on this car. Once I got the lead I just had to hold the thing straight.”

Tommy Meier and Peter Britten, who battled all race long, had career-best Super DIRTcar Series finishes, coming home in second and third, respectively. Gary Tomkins finished in fourth, with Tim Fuller rounding out the top 5, despite losing air pressure in his right rear tire on the final lap.

Brian Krummel used a last lap pass on Billy Eggers to win the Orange County Fair Speedway sportsman 25-lap feature.

The next Big-Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series event will be July 3 at Cornwall Motor Speedway followed July 4 by the Stars & Stripes 100 at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.

ur11-1921
VERNON, NY- A picture perfect evening for racing greeted fans at Utica-Rome Speedway for another exciting night of racing on Triple B Welding and Canastota Kart Speedway night, and they saw Stewart Friesen continue his march through the speedway’s record book. Friesen dominated in the late stages of the 30 lap event to grab his 30th career win at the Vernon oval and climb to fourth on the all time win list. Matt Janczuk was the Sportsman winner with Mark Effner taking the Pro Stock win. Ron Hawker took top honors in the Pure Stocks with Ryan Charland taking the win in the visiting Mod Lites.
Chris Busta and Paul Kinney led the 22 car starting field to the green flag with Kinney grabbing the lead over Busta, Kenny Tremont, Casey Williams, and Brad Alger. As Kinney opened a huge advantage over the rest field, Tremont slipped by Busta to take second on lap four but the driver on the move at this point was defending Modified track champion Stewart Friesen. Friesen started 15th on the grid and immediately went to the extreme top groove and began to pass cars in wholesale fashion. Already in the top 10 by the second lap, Friesen then cracked the top five as lap six was being cored as he came across the line in fourth.
The first caution of the night came out on lap eight when Alan Barker slid off the top of turn three which allowed the field to bunch back on Kinney’s bumper. On the restart, Friesen slid into the third spot behind Kinney and Tremont and as lap 10 was completed the top three remained the same with Bill Trexler Jr. and Todd Burley rounding out the top five.
Lap 11 saw Friesen grab second from Tremont and he immediately went after Kinney. Friesen completed his charge as he charged by Kinney on lap 13 with the second caution flying as the lap was completed. With Friesen in control, all eyes were focused now on another driver on the charge. After struggling in the heat race, Ronnie Johnson started 17th on field and went to work at the start. Methodically making his way forward, Johnson broke into the top 10 on lap five and into the top five on lap 14.
The final caution came out on lap 15 as Bobby Varin slowed in turn two which gave the rest of the field one more chance to catch Friesen. When green flag racing resumed, Friesen showed no signs of letting up as he rocketed away from the field. At this point, Johnson continued his run to the front as he grabbed third from Trexler on lap 22. Johnson’s charge would end there as when the checkered flag flew, Friesen took the win with Kinney, Johnson, Trexler, and Burley trailing. Tremont, Pat Ward, Willy Decker, Jason Rood, and Dale Planck rounded out the top ten.
Brian Thomas led the first three circuits of the Sportsman 20 lap main event, with 10th place starter AJ Filbeck taking the point on lap four. With Filbeck out front, Matt Janczuk was moving through the field from 13th. Janczuk moved into the top five on lap six and then was second just past halfway on lap 11. Two circuits later, Janczuk was able to slip under Filbeck as the field began to enter lapped traffic to take the lead. Despite a late race caution, Janczuk would go unheeded to the win with Jeff Leslie chasing him to the checkered flag. Chris Mackey, Jim Rothwell, and Filbeck would round out the top five at the finish.
The Pro Stock feature saw Jeremy Vunk lead the opening lap of the 20 lap event with Jim Normoyle taking over for the next three circuits. 10th place starter Mark Effner was the next to take a turn out front as he took over on lap five. On lap seven, Bret Belden slipped by Effner on the restart to lead but at the halfway point Effner retook the top spot. 13th place starter Rocky Warner was the next driver to try and lead the race but Effner held off his challenge to continue his quest for the win. A couple of late race cautions gave Warner and Belden another shot for the lead but once again, Effner wasn’t going to be denied as he took the win with Belden, Tom Denton, Warner, and Shawn Frost chasing.
Pure Stock action saw Rob Thieme lead the opening three laps until Rick Breed sped by on lap four. Breed looked stout during the mid portion of the 15 lap race but then something seemed go away as Ron Hawker, from eighth, got by for the lead and the win. Thieme got second ahead of Bill Mason, Frank Hyatt, and Chris Cunningham.

Willix wins again at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park

June 14, 2011

FULTONVILLE – The modified division at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park has a short list of multiple feature winners this season.

Last week, Paul Kinney became the first two-time winner this season. Friday night, Lance Willix made the most of a lap-16 restart to grab the lead away from David Constantino and crossed under the checkers ahead of Kenny Tremont to claim his second 35-lap DIRTCar modifed feature win of the season.

Joining Willix with victories Friday night at the Ridge were Rocky Warner (sportsman), Rob VanAernam (street stock), Jon Young (cruiser) and John Miller (rookie sportsman).

The Marv Pedrick Contracting-sponsored modified feature got off to an auspicious start when a four-wide run between turns three and four caused contact between Don Ronca and John Marsh, sending Marsh sideways with the majority of the 22-car field bearing down.

The melee ended the night for Bobby Varin and Elmo Reckner, while Kenny Tremont, Craig Hanson, Jackie Brown and Marsh recovered to rejoin the race at the back of the pack.

Constantino broke away on the restart, but was brought back to the field when the caution flew on lap three for a incident involving Tremont, Brown and JaMike Sowle. All three were able to return to the action.

Constantino again pulled away from John Lutes Jr. leaving him to battle with Marc Johnson and Don Ronca.

The race went under its second red flag on lap 15 when the sixth- and seventh-place cars of Hanson and Brown came together on the frontstretch. Brown made hard contact with the frontstretch wall.

When the race restarted Constantino was at the point with Johnson second and Willix running third, but a big move by Willix propelled him into the lead on the 16th circuit.

Tremont was steadily picking his way through the field and with five laps remaining passed Constantino to take second. The division points leader quickly cut into Willix’s lead but ran out of time as the checkers dropped over Willix’s hood for the victory.

Tremont padded his division points lead with his second-straight runner-up finish. Constantino was third with Johnson fourth and Mike Ronca fifth. Sowle, Don Ronca, Kinney, Hanson and Rich Ronca completed the top 10.

VanAernam, the defending street stock track champion, passed Chuck McSpirit on lap nine and turned back the challenges of Dan Older and McSpirit for his fourth win of the season. Cliff Haslun was fourth and Darryl Older finished fifth.

Warner grabbed the lead away from early-race leader Rick LaMont to collect his third sportsman feature win of the year. Justin Boehler was second followed by LaMont, Mike Tholin and Bodie Bellinger.

Young turned back Laurie Fallis for his first feature win of the season.

Racing returns to the Ridge next Friday night for Cancer Awareness Night sponsored by Sampson Motor Car.

Ken Schrader Returns to the High Banks, But Bachetti Steals the Show

May 23, 2011

The legendary Lebanon Valley Speedway was once again battling the elements as early evening rains kept racing at bay, but it wasn’t gonna dampen the entire night of racing! NASCAR veteran Kenny Schrader was on tap for the special Doherty Brothers Construction and Adirondack Tire Night of racing action.

Race Recap: In the Modified 30 lap feature event, Schrader had to watch deep in the field as Andy Bachetti and Brett Hearn battled for the win. But it was Bachetti that survived to take the victory. In the LV Sportsman division, Steve Meilleur made a dramatic last lap pass to take the 20 lap Sportsman Feature.

In the packed 20 lap Budget Sportsman feature, Jason Harrington held off a 30 car field to take the checkers while in the Pro Stocks Jason Casey battled Danny Sanchez in the closing laps to take the 20 lap feature. While in the Purestocks, it was Ray Hall Sr, Al Relyea, and Rob Partridge scoring wins.

The Story: The battle at the mighty high banks wasn’t just on the speedway but over the speedway. Just as the gates were about to open, a brief shower delayed the start of the nights events. Then, just as racing was under way, the modifieds were lined up to take to the Valley of Speed for their heat races, the rain returned once again for another 10 minute shower.

Even though it took another 20 minutes to get the track back to race ready condition, there were no more threats for above, so the racing was back under way.

Kenny Schrader climbed aboard the #115S provided by the Tremont race team, but electrical issues plagued the team all night. As the 30 lap feature got under way, Paul Gilardi powered out front early at the drop of the green. Gilardi’s lead was short lived as Andy Bachetti charged out front by lap 5 and check out on the field.

But all eyes were on the #20 of Brett Hearn as he had to start from the rear with a back up car and was charging through the field. By lap 20, Hearn made his way past Eddie Marshall and Donnie Corellis to reach 2nd, and began to reel in the leader. As the laps ran out on the Kokosa Oil Lap Counter, Hearn made a couple of last ditch efforts, but Bachetti had just enough to take the win.

Following Bachetti was Hearn, Marshall, Corellis and Kenny Tremont Jr., while Schrader finished 16th.

Ryan Darcy brought the LV Sportsman to the green for their 20 lap feature, but once again, the #21 suffered mechanical issues, and dropped off the pace by lap 9. That handed the lead over to the #88JR of Olden Dwyer. Dwyer powered out to the lead and held strong for 10 more circuits with heavy pressure from behind from the #36 of Steve Meilleur and #98 of Kolby Schroder.

On the closing lap, the battle got hot and heavy as Meilleur and Schroder made their moves at the same time, leaving Dwyer as a sitting duck getting into turn 3. As the 3 battled, Dwyer tried to fight back, but to no avail as Schroder and Meilleur rubbed and bumped their way to the stripe! Mielleur held on to take the victory with Schroder scrabbling to hold onto 2nd. Dwyer had to settle for a tough 3rd with Alan Houghtaling and Chad Pierce rounding out the top 5.

In the Budget Sportsman 20 lap feature, 30 cars took to the high banks but it was a 2 car show out front as Jason Harrington and Whitey Slavin battle for much of the race to decide to winner. As the laps ran out, Harrington powered out to take the win with Slavin crossing the line 2nd. Tim Hartman Jr powered his way through the field to finish 3rd, followed by Jake Jelley and Robbie Knipe.

With hard racing action continuing to the 20 lap Pro Stock feature, the race was more like survival. Throughout the majority of the feature, the top 12 where bumper to bumper and door to door leaving everyone in the stands on the edge of their seats! But up front the action was with Jason Casey and Danny Sanchez as they battle for the closing 5 laps with Casey holding on for the win. Sanchez crossed the line 2nd followed by Chad Jesseo, Jay Corbin, and Cale Kneer.

While in the Purestocks, it was Ray Hall Sr took Purestock #1, Al Relyea won Pure stock #2, and Rob Partridge took the 12 lap Pure stock #3.

Next Saturday night the Times Union and Budweiser present a special $4,000 to win Modified feature event, with all divisions in action including the 4 cylinders. The Lowdown on the Showdown in Sarvertown Dave Hess Jr. looking for rare Double Victory

May 12, 2011

As we continue to look forward to the $5,000-to-win Showdown in Sarvertown featuring the All Star Late Model Series at the Action Track this Friday, April 29 by profiling some of the stars of what promises to be a loaded field of the finest Late Model drivers in the region, Dave Hess Jr. once again comes face-to-face with Lernerville Speedway history.

Last summer, Hess made history by claiming the 2010 Budweiser Track Championship in the Precise Racing Products DIRTcar Late Models. In doing so, he and his father joined an elite group of father/son Track Champions. This Friday, April 29, Hess will try to become one of an elite few drivers to accomplish the impressive feat; a list which includes Hall of Famers Bob Wearing Sr., Lou Blaney and (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) Swartzlander and most recently David Scott during the 2000 season.

Hess is certainly no stranger to Sheetz Victory Lane, with multiple wins in both divisions, including three in the Late Model and one in the UMP Mod last year. But doing so on the same night would be an historic accomplishment!

Hess nearly achieved it last year during this same event, as he won the UMP Modified feature, after finishing second in the All Star A-Main behind Robbie Blair. “I think it also puts more pressure on me to compete because of the caliber of racers that show up. We try as hard as we can to win every week, but special shows add some more pressure to do well.” Hess continued, “Winning the All Star race at Lernerville would be really good for my career. Being so close last year, with a second place finish, puts a little more pressure on me this year to win; knowing I was so close last year!”

Running two cars in one night can also create more pressure as it presents interesting challenges, especially during a big event which includes time trials for the All Star Late Models, but Hess takes it all in stride, “Lernerville is definitely the type of track that experience and track time pay off. We don’t really have much of a different routine; we just make sure the cars are as good as they can be early because the first laps could be the most important of the night.”

With $5,000 on the line for the Showdown in Sarvertown and history in the making, Hess will certainly have his elbows up and right foot deep into the gas all night long!

Hess drives a family owned Rocket Chassis powered by a Craiger Race Engine. Crew members include 1980/1983 Late Model Track Champion Dave Hess Sr., Jimmy, Mark, Mike and Geoff. 2011 sponsors on Hess’s #44 are Hess Garage & Salvage, Linda’s Notary Service, Plyler Overhead Door, Beacon Lubricants, Jim Brozell Construction, Matt Teribery Flooring, Collision World, Genesis Shocks, Hoosier Tire, Fast Shafts, Simpson Race Products, Kinder Motorsports Media, MWB Graphics &Web Design, Koldrock, VP Race Fuels, Valken Wheels.

The Friday Night’s Showdown in Sarvertown featuring the All Star Late Model Series, will set the stage for the upcoming 5th Annual Firecracker 100 presented GottaRace.com in late June. With 50 laps and $5,000 on the line, a loaded field of Late Model drivers is expected and at just $20 for adult general admission, the bang for your buck is unmatched! Seniors tickets are $18, students (11-17 years old) are just $15 and, as always, kids 10 & under are FREE! Gates open at 5:00, with hot laps set for 7:00, followed by time trials. The DIRTcar Pro Late Models and UMP Modifieds are also on the Showdown in Sarvertown card.
