MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – June 21, 2011 – For the second consecutive race, Billy Decker parked his Big-Block Modified in victory lane on the Super DIRTcar Series trail after winning “The Big Show III” Tuesday night at Orange County Fair Speedway. (Mike Petrucci Photo)

Decker used a lap-40 restart to his advantage, using the outside line to sweep around then-leader Tim Fuller. From there, there was no looking back, as Decker survived multiple late race restarts to collect his second win in the Brett Hearn promoted Big Show series. “I really like taking home Brett Hearn’s money,” claimed an elated Decker in victory lane. “The Gypsum Race Team did an awesome job again on this car. Once I got the lead I just had to hold the thing straight.”

Tommy Meier and Peter Britten, who battled all race long, had career-best Super DIRTcar Series finishes, coming home in second and third, respectively. Gary Tomkins finished in fourth, with Tim Fuller rounding out the top 5, despite losing air pressure in his right rear tire on the final lap.

Brian Krummel used a last lap pass on Billy Eggers to win the Orange County Fair Speedway sportsman 25-lap feature.

The next Big-Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series event will be July 3 at Cornwall Motor Speedway followed July 4 by the Stars & Stripes 100 at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.

VERNON, NY- A picture perfect evening for racing greeted fans at Utica-Rome Speedway for another exciting night of racing on Triple B Welding and Canastota Kart Speedway night, and they saw Stewart Friesen continue his march through the speedway’s record book. Friesen dominated in the late stages of the 30 lap event to grab his 30th career win at the Vernon oval and climb to fourth on the all time win list. Matt Janczuk was the Sportsman winner with Mark Effner taking the Pro Stock win. Ron Hawker took top honors in the Pure Stocks with Ryan Charland taking the win in the visiting Mod Lites.
Chris Busta and Paul Kinney led the 22 car starting field to the green flag with Kinney grabbing the lead over Busta, Kenny Tremont, Casey Williams, and Brad Alger. As Kinney opened a huge advantage over the rest field, Tremont slipped by Busta to take second on lap four but the driver on the move at this point was defending Modified track champion Stewart Friesen. Friesen started 15th on the grid and immediately went to the extreme top groove and began to pass cars in wholesale fashion. Already in the top 10 by the second lap, Friesen then cracked the top five as lap six was being cored as he came across the line in fourth.
The first caution of the night came out on lap eight when Alan Barker slid off the top of turn three which allowed the field to bunch back on Kinney’s bumper. On the restart, Friesen slid into the third spot behind Kinney and Tremont and as lap 10 was completed the top three remained the same with Bill Trexler Jr. and Todd Burley rounding out the top five.
Lap 11 saw Friesen grab second from Tremont and he immediately went after Kinney. Friesen completed his charge as he charged by Kinney on lap 13 with the second caution flying as the lap was completed. With Friesen in control, all eyes were focused now on another driver on the charge. After struggling in the heat race, Ronnie Johnson started 17th on field and went to work at the start. Methodically making his way forward, Johnson broke into the top 10 on lap five and into the top five on lap 14.
The final caution came out on lap 15 as Bobby Varin slowed in turn two which gave the rest of the field one more chance to catch Friesen. When green flag racing resumed, Friesen showed no signs of letting up as he rocketed away from the field. At this point, Johnson continued his run to the front as he grabbed third from Trexler on lap 22. Johnson’s charge would end there as when the checkered flag flew, Friesen took the win with Kinney, Johnson, Trexler, and Burley trailing. Tremont, Pat Ward, Willy Decker, Jason Rood, and Dale Planck rounded out the top ten.
Brian Thomas led the first three circuits of the Sportsman 20 lap main event, with 10th place starter AJ Filbeck taking the point on lap four. With Filbeck out front, Matt Janczuk was moving through the field from 13th. Janczuk moved into the top five on lap six and then was second just past halfway on lap 11. Two circuits later, Janczuk was able to slip under Filbeck as the field began to enter lapped traffic to take the lead. Despite a late race caution, Janczuk would go unheeded to the win with Jeff Leslie chasing him to the checkered flag. Chris Mackey, Jim Rothwell, and Filbeck would round out the top five at the finish.
The Pro Stock feature saw Jeremy Vunk lead the opening lap of the 20 lap event with Jim Normoyle taking over for the next three circuits. 10th place starter Mark Effner was the next to take a turn out front as he took over on lap five. On lap seven, Bret Belden slipped by Effner on the restart to lead but at the halfway point Effner retook the top spot. 13th place starter Rocky Warner was the next driver to try and lead the race but Effner held off his challenge to continue his quest for the win. A couple of late race cautions gave Warner and Belden another shot for the lead but once again, Effner wasn’t going to be denied as he took the win with Belden, Tom Denton, Warner, and Shawn Frost chasing.
Pure Stock action saw Rob Thieme lead the opening three laps until Rick Breed sped by on lap four. Breed looked stout during the mid portion of the 15 lap race but then something seemed go away as Ron Hawker, from eighth, got by for the lead and the win. Thieme got second ahead of Bill Mason, Frank Hyatt, and Chris Cunningham.
Ryan Charland led all 15 laps of the Mod Lite feature event with Joe Isabell surviving a spirited battle with his brother Jeremy to grab the second spot. Jeremy Isabell finished in third with Gary Jeffries and Lowell Zehr rounding out the top five.

Willix wins again at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park

June 14, 2011

By JAMES A. ELLIS (sports@leaderherald.com) , The Leader Herald

FULTONVILLE – The modified division at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park has a short list of multiple feature winners this season.

Last week, Paul Kinney became the first two-time winner this season. Friday night, Lance Willix made the most of a lap-16 restart to grab the lead away from David Constantino and crossed under the checkers ahead of Kenny Tremont to claim his second 35-lap DIRTCar modifed feature win of the season.

Joining Willix with victories Friday night at the Ridge were Rocky Warner (sportsman), Rob VanAernam (street stock), Jon Young (cruiser) and John Miller (rookie sportsman).

The Marv Pedrick Contracting-sponsored modified feature got off to an auspicious start when a four-wide run between turns three and four caused contact between Don Ronca and John Marsh, sending Marsh sideways with the majority of the 22-car field bearing down.

The melee ended the night for Bobby Varin and Elmo Reckner, while Kenny Tremont, Craig Hanson, Jackie Brown and Marsh recovered to rejoin the race at the back of the pack.

Constantino broke away on the restart, but was brought back to the field when the caution flew on lap three for a incident involving Tremont, Brown and JaMike Sowle. All three were able to return to the action.

Constantino again pulled away from John Lutes Jr. leaving him to battle with Marc Johnson and Don Ronca.

The race went under its second red flag on lap 15 when the sixth- and seventh-place cars of Hanson and Brown came together on the frontstretch. Brown made hard contact with the frontstretch wall.

When the race restarted Constantino was at the point with Johnson second and Willix running third, but a big move by Willix propelled him into the lead on the 16th circuit.

Tremont was steadily picking his way through the field and with five laps remaining passed Constantino to take second. The division points leader quickly cut into Willix’s lead but ran out of time as the checkers dropped over Willix’s hood for the victory.

Tremont padded his division points lead with his second-straight runner-up finish. Constantino was third with Johnson fourth and Mike Ronca fifth. Sowle, Don Ronca, Kinney, Hanson and Rich Ronca completed the top 10.

VanAernam, the defending street stock track champion, passed Chuck McSpirit on lap nine and turned back the challenges of Dan Older and McSpirit for his fourth win of the season. Cliff Haslun was fourth and Darryl Older finished fifth.

Warner grabbed the lead away from early-race leader Rick LaMont to collect his third sportsman feature win of the year. Justin Boehler was second followed by LaMont, Mike Tholin and Bodie Bellinger.

Young turned back Laurie Fallis for his first feature win of the season.

Racing returns to the Ridge next Friday night for Cancer Awareness Night sponsored by Sampson Motor Car.

Ken Schrader Returns to the High Banks, But Bachetti Steals the Show

May 23, 2011

The legendary Lebanon Valley Speedway was once again battling the elements as early evening rains kept racing at bay, but it wasn’t gonna dampen the entire night of racing! NASCAR veteran Kenny Schrader was on tap for the special Doherty Brothers Construction and Adirondack Tire Night of racing action.

Race Recap: In the Modified 30 lap feature event, Schrader had to watch deep in the field as Andy Bachetti and Brett Hearn battled for the win. But it was Bachetti that survived to take the victory. In the LV Sportsman division, Steve Meilleur made a dramatic last lap pass to take the 20 lap Sportsman Feature.

In the packed 20 lap Budget Sportsman feature, Jason Harrington held off a 30 car field to take the checkers while in the Pro Stocks Jason Casey battled Danny Sanchez in the closing laps to take the 20 lap feature. While in the Purestocks, it was Ray Hall Sr, Al Relyea, and Rob Partridge scoring wins.

The Story: The battle at the mighty high banks wasn’t just on the speedway but over the speedway. Just as the gates were about to open, a brief shower delayed the start of the nights events. Then, just as racing was under way, the modifieds were lined up to take to the Valley of Speed for their heat races, the rain returned once again for another 10 minute shower.

Even though it took another 20 minutes to get the track back to race ready condition, there were no more threats for above, so the racing was back under way.

Kenny Schrader climbed aboard the #115S provided by the Tremont race team, but electrical issues plagued the team all night. As the 30 lap feature got under way, Paul Gilardi powered out front early at the drop of the green. Gilardi’s lead was short lived as Andy Bachetti charged out front by lap 5 and check out on the field.

But all eyes were on the #20 of Brett Hearn as he had to start from the rear with a back up car and was charging through the field. By lap 20, Hearn made his way past Eddie Marshall and Donnie Corellis to reach 2nd, and began to reel in the leader. As the laps ran out on the Kokosa Oil Lap Counter, Hearn made a couple of last ditch efforts, but Bachetti had just enough to take the win.

Following Bachetti was Hearn, Marshall, Corellis and Kenny Tremont Jr., while Schrader finished 16th.

Ryan Darcy brought the LV Sportsman to the green for their 20 lap feature, but once again, the #21 suffered mechanical issues, and dropped off the pace by lap 9. That handed the lead over to the #88JR of Olden Dwyer. Dwyer powered out to the lead and held strong for 10 more circuits with heavy pressure from behind from the #36 of Steve Meilleur and #98 of Kolby Schroder.

On the closing lap, the battle got hot and heavy as Meilleur and Schroder made their moves at the same time, leaving Dwyer as a sitting duck getting into turn 3. As the 3 battled, Dwyer tried to fight back, but to no avail as Schroder and Meilleur rubbed and bumped their way to the stripe! Mielleur held on to take the victory with Schroder scrabbling to hold onto 2nd. Dwyer had to settle for a tough 3rd with Alan Houghtaling and Chad Pierce rounding out the top 5.

In the Budget Sportsman 20 lap feature, 30 cars took to the high banks but it was a 2 car show out front as Jason Harrington and Whitey Slavin battle for much of the race to decide to winner. As the laps ran out, Harrington powered out to take the win with Slavin crossing the line 2nd. Tim Hartman Jr powered his way through the field to finish 3rd, followed by Jake Jelley and Robbie Knipe.

With hard racing action continuing to the 20 lap Pro Stock feature, the race was more like survival. Throughout the majority of the feature, the top 12 where bumper to bumper and door to door leaving everyone in the stands on the edge of their seats! But up front the action was with Jason Casey and Danny Sanchez as they battle for the closing 5 laps with Casey holding on for the win. Sanchez crossed the line 2nd followed by Chad Jesseo, Jay Corbin, and Cale Kneer.

While in the Purestocks, it was Ray Hall Sr took Purestock #1, Al Relyea won Pure stock #2, and Rob Partridge took the 12 lap Pure stock #3.

Next Saturday night the Times Union and Budweiser present a special $4,000 to win Modified feature event, with all divisions in action including the 4 cylinders. The Lowdown on the Showdown in Sarvertown Dave Hess Jr. looking for rare Double Victory

May 12, 2011

As we continue to look forward to the $5,000-to-win Showdown in Sarvertown featuring the All Star Late Model Series at the Action Track this Friday, April 29 by profiling some of the stars of what promises to be a loaded field of the finest Late Model drivers in the region, Dave Hess Jr. once again comes face-to-face with Lernerville Speedway history.

Last summer, Hess made history by claiming the 2010 Budweiser Track Championship in the Precise Racing Products DIRTcar Late Models. In doing so, he and his father joined an elite group of father/son Track Champions. This Friday, April 29, Hess will try to become one of an elite few drivers to accomplish the impressive feat; a list which includes Hall of Famers Bob Wearing Sr., Lou Blaney and (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) Swartzlander and most recently David Scott during the 2000 season.

Hess is certainly no stranger to Sheetz Victory Lane, with multiple wins in both divisions, including three in the Late Model and one in the UMP Mod last year. But doing so on the same night would be an historic accomplishment!

Hess nearly achieved it last year during this same event, as he won the UMP Modified feature, after finishing second in the All Star A-Main behind Robbie Blair. “I think it also puts more pressure on me to compete because of the caliber of racers that show up. We try as hard as we can to win every week, but special shows add some more pressure to do well.” Hess continued, “Winning the All Star race at Lernerville would be really good for my career. Being so close last year, with a second place finish, puts a little more pressure on me this year to win; knowing I was so close last year!”

Running two cars in one night can also create more pressure as it presents interesting challenges, especially during a big event which includes time trials for the All Star Late Models, but Hess takes it all in stride, “Lernerville is definitely the type of track that experience and track time pay off. We don’t really have much of a different routine; we just make sure the cars are as good as they can be early because the first laps could be the most important of the night.”

With $5,000 on the line for the Showdown in Sarvertown and history in the making, Hess will certainly have his elbows up and right foot deep into the gas all night long!

Hess drives a family owned Rocket Chassis powered by a Craiger Race Engine. Crew members include 1980/1983 Late Model Track Champion Dave Hess Sr., Jimmy, Mark, Mike and Geoff. 2011 sponsors on Hess’s #44 are Hess Garage & Salvage, Linda’s Notary Service, Plyler Overhead Door, Beacon Lubricants, Jim Brozell Construction, Matt Teribery Flooring, Collision World, Genesis Shocks, Hoosier Tire, Fast Shafts, Simpson Race Products, Kinder Motorsports Media, MWB Graphics &Web Design, Koldrock, VP Race Fuels, Valken Wheels.

The Friday Night’s Showdown in Sarvertown featuring the All Star Late Model Series, will set the stage for the upcoming 5th Annual Firecracker 100 presented GottaRace.com in late June. With 50 laps and $5,000 on the line, a loaded field of Late Model drivers is expected and at just $20 for adult general admission, the bang for your buck is unmatched! Seniors tickets are $18, students (11-17 years old) are just $15 and, as always, kids 10 & under are FREE! Gates open at 5:00, with hot laps set for 7:00, followed by time trials. The DIRTcar Pro Late Models and UMP Modifieds are also on the Showdown in Sarvertown card.

Dupree wins 50 lap Opening Day feature at Airborne

May 11, 2011

Opening night at Airborne…good crowd for a cool night, good (but sometimes rough and tumble) racing.

Definitely great to be back at the track, good tone set for the season once the drivers calm down a little bit…maybe all the moisture we’ve had (lots of flooding up here, ground is saturated in a way that I’ve never seen before in May, and a very green track with little rubber) was part of the issue, too.

358 MODS, 50 laps: Patrick Dupree, Greg Atkins, Vince Quenneville, Don Scarborough, Todd Stone.

Dupree starts off his title defense with a three-wide pass on the outside going into turn three on lap 38 and powers on for a popular win. Greg Atkins is fast all night for second, Quenneville gets by Scarborough in late stages for third, Todd Stone (after going to the tail in a lap one tangle) charges back for fifth.

Mods were unusually rough and tumble tonight, some of it is opening night jitters, some of it is just being way too aggressive too early, result: lots of bent up race cars. Not at all characteristic of the guys at Airborne. Don’t know how many guys can afford THAT for long.

Once they went to single file restarts (on lap three!), the racing was good. Martin Roy leads early on, looks like he has the car to beat, but fades as he uses up his tires in lapped traffic. Dupree started 15th but due to early tangles was already 5th by lap 2. Great three wide battle for the lead — Dupree is patient in third, Atkins darts low to challenge Roy for the lead on lap 38 and while Roy is preoccupied with Atkins, Dupree stands on it and swings high to steal the top spot in an awesome power move.

Huge heartbreak for Leon Gonyo — looks good in his heat race, starts on the pole and is fast, but he and Jason Bruno get together on a restart and breaks front end.

How ’bout them Green Mountain boys, too, 3rd-5th!

Heats: Atkins, Jason Bruno, Leon Gonyo.

2nd heat: Michel Viens goes for a scary ride…Jason Bruno gets sideways on backstretch after ferocious scramble up front–looks like there may have been contact with another car but can’t be sure. Pierre Berthiame appears to tag Bruno, breaks front end, slides down across the track, Michel Viens has nowhere to go, up and over Berthiame and sliding down the back stretch on the roof. When Viens goes up and over the bank and hits the turf, things go from bad to worse — carthwheeling side-over-side 2-3 times, rear bumper breaks away and looks like it is headed for orbit for a few seconds…walks away, car is trashed. Bad way to start the season.

Chris Raabe Wins DIRTcar 358 Mods at CanAm

May 10, 2011

On a cool and crisp spring evening, Chapman’s Can-Am Motorsports Park roared to life with a full night of racing action. Headlining the evening were the 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, Late Models, Street Stocks, Thunder Cars, Mod Lites, IMCA Modifieds and Purestocks.

The Street Stocks kicked off the night’s racing action with their 15 lap feature event. Russ Marsden and Jerod Radley led the field to their green flag with Jerod Radley taking the control of the field. Sid Harmer Jr. slipped to the inside of Russ Marsden as the pair headed into turn three and four to take over the second position. Sid Harmer Jr. then used the same line to slip under Jerod Radley as the two battled for the lead of the field. Sid Harmer Sr. pulled to the inside of Phillip Walker to take over the fourth position. The top four raced from nose to tail down the back stretch as a heated battled was taking place for the top four positions. Sid Harmer Jr. pulled to the inside of Jerod Radley going into turn number two for the lead of the field. Russ Marsden followed Harmer Jr. and also pulled to the inside of Radley slipped into the number 2 spot. Sid Harmer Jr. took the win over Russ Marsden and Sid Harmer Sr.

OJ White and Matt Marcinko led the Thunder Car division to the green flag with their 15 lap feature. OJ White took the early lead as Mike Blair and Jock Symonds filling out the top three. Jock Symonds pulled to the outside of Mike Blair in turn number three and four to slip into the second position as Blair, Chuck Monica and Sean Berry filled out the top five. On a lap five restart, John Williams pulled to the highest groove on the speedway coming across the front stretch and pulled into the third position. Shane Ray moved into the third position as he slid past Rob Martin. Jock Symonds continued to lead the way as the five to go sign was shown to the field. Matt Marcinko, who was the outside pole sitter, slid back in the pack and quietly moved his way back up to the front. As the two to go sign was shown, Marcinko slipped under John Williams in turn number three for the second position. As the field came down for the checkered flag, Jock Symonds collected the win over Matt Marcinko and John Williams.

Bobby Herrington and Andy Howard led the 358 Modified feature to Matt Burdick’s green flag in their 25 lap feature event with Bobby Herrington taking the early lead on the field. Brandon Sweet slipped to the inside of Andy Howard for the third position as the two moved into turn number two. Chris Raabe and Billy Dunn power under Andy Howard going into turn number one for the fourth and fifth position. Chris Raabe slid under Brandon Sweet for the third position while Tim O’Brien followed and took over position number four as eight laps clocked on the lap counter. Billy Dunn did a power dive on Brandon Sweet coming out of turn number four to enter the top five. Chris Raabe used a lap 18 restart to power around Bobby Herrington for the lead on the field as Tim O’Brien slipped into third. As the checkered flag waived, Chris Raabe collected the win over Bobby Herrington and Tim O’Brien.

Brandon Hagan and Jeff Stevenson led the Sportsman division to the green flag in their 20 lap feature event. Brandon Hagan took the early lead with Jeff Stevenson slipping into second. Dylan Evoy slipped to the bottom of the speedway in turn number two and took the second position from Stevenson down the backstretch. Evoy would continue to use that bottom line as he began to track down leader Hagan as the rest of the field began to settle into their positions. Dylan Evoy used that bottom lane to move by Brandon Hagan as Jeff Stevenson, Christian Smoke and Josh Van Brocklin filled out the top five. As the checkered flag waved, Dylan Evoy picked up the win with Brandon Hagan and Jeff Stevenson rounding out the top three.

Phil Potts and Greg Peake led the Late Model feature to the green with Phil Potts jumping to the early lead. Greg Belyea quickly made his presence known as he sliced through the field and took the lead. Lee Gill powered around Mike Trapp to take the third position as Greg Belyea and Phil Potts battled it out for the lead. Lee Gill moved around Greg Belyea for the second position. Greg Belyea used a lap car to gain some track position as pressured Gill again for the second position. Lee Gill kicked up some dust as he was tracking down Phil Potts in a heated battle for the lead. Lee Gill used the top side of the speedway coming out of turn number two and going down the back stretch to move ahead of Phil Potts and take the lead. As the checkered flag dropped, Lee Gill collected the win over Greg Belyea and Phil Potts.

Tiger Chapman and Matt Mevten led the Mod Lites to the green flag in their 20 lap feature event. Mike Rainville pulled to the outside of Tiger Chapman coming out of turn number two to take the lead of the field as Chapman, Matt Rainville, Rich Rainville and Bryan Green filled out the top five. Rich Rainville pulled to the outside of Tiger Chapman to take over the third position. As the checkered flag dropped, Rich Rainville would take the checkered flag over Bryan Green and Mike Rainville.

Rick Duskas and Ryan Scott led the IMCA Modified division to green with Rick Duskas taking the lead on the field. Ryan Scott slipped to the inside of Rick Duskas heading into turn number three with Scott taking the lead on the field. Chris Thurston pulled to the top side of the speedway and moved around Shawn Kirby for third. Chris Thurston pulled around Shawn Kirby for the second position while Ryan Scott stretched out his lead on the field. Ryan Scott collected the win over Shawn Kirby and Rick Duskas.

Steven Gilmore picked up the win in the Purestock division as he would lead from green to checkered in their 12 lap feature event. Kevin Smith and Kirk Stone rounded out the top three.
Chapman’s Can-Am Motorsports Park will return to racing on Friday, May 13, 2011 with the Junction Boys Inc presenting the Tim Dillenback Memorial for the 358 Modifieds. Joining them will be the Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, Street Stocks, Thunder Cars, Purestocks and Mod Lites

Ronnie Johnson Gets 2nd Victory of the Year at Fonda

Saturday night, the 30-lap modified feature at Fonda Speedway came down to a three-lap shoot out.

Ronnie Johnson grabbed the lead away from Ryan Odasz with 10 laps remaining but had to survive three restarts in the closing laps with hot shoes, Odasz, Stewart Friesen, Matt DeLorenzo and Bobby Varin on his back bumper.

Johnson turned back all challenges to pick up his second win of the season and 17th of his career at Fonda Speedway.

Joining Johnson with feature wins Saturday night were Rocky Warner (pro stock), Rob Langavin (602 sportsman) and Ken Conroy (street stock). Ben Riggi picked up his first 4-cylinder victory at Fonda Speedway.

Mayfield’s Dustin Delaney made the most of his front row starting spot to grab the early lead with Odasz and Johnson in pursuit.

The frontrunning trio crossed the finish line in a tight pack on lap 16 with Odasz a bumper in front.

Johnson found his way around Delaney, and two laps later, Johnson slipped past and set his sights on Odasz. He got around Odasz on lap 19 before the first caution of the race flew for oil on the speedway.

After an extended caution period, Johnson held his lead over Odasz, Matt DeLorenzo, Delaney and Jimmy Davis. The caution was the break that Stewart Friesen, Jeff Trombley and Bobby Varin were looking for.

DeLorenzo moved into the runner-up spot on the restart, while Friesen moved into the top five. Varin charged from 11th to seventh and was in a three-way battle for fifth when DeLorenzo slowed on the front stretch, bringing out the caution with six laps remaining.

Friesen made a big move on the restart, charging from fourth to second and Varin followed suit, settling into third, with Odasz and Davis rounding out the top five.

The yellow came out one more time on lap 28 when Craig Hanson came to a stop in turn three, bunching Johnson, Friesen and Varin up with a clear track in front of them for a three-lap shootout.

With Varin and Friesen running side-by-side for a lap, Johnson was able to put space between himself and the battle for second. It was enough of a cushion to beat Varin to the checkers by 1.7 seconds. Friesen was third, with Davis and Trombley completing the top five. Odasz, Elmo Reckner, Marc Johnson, Darwin Green and Danny Varin complete the top 10.

Troy Palmer brought the field of 26 602 sportsman to the green and held the point for the opening lap before Langevin found his way to the front on the second circuit. With the race running caution-free, Langevin kept a steady rhythm and was able to pick his spots through traffic. Meanwhile, Jeremy Pitts, Justin Auspelmyer, Rick Quick, John Scarborough and Cody Bleau were locked in a tight battle for second.

Langevin cruised to his first career Fonda Speedway sportsman feature win. Pitts, a rookie in the division, held off Auspelmyer and Quick for second and Scarborugh edged Bleau for the fifth spot. Steve Akers, Ray Zemken, John McAuliffe and Jeremiah Munson rounded out the top 10.

Warner kept his season perfect with his second straight pro stock feature win of the season to go with a dash-for-cash win on Ice Jam Weekend.

Dean Charbonneau and Kim Duell battled on the front end of the 20-lap pro stock main event, with Ivan Joslin quickly making his way through the pack and into third.

Back-to-back cautions on lap four kept the field bunched up, but when the race restarted, Warner was on the move. The Gloversville driver moved past Duell and Joslin to be second behind Charbonneau on lap five and two laps later moved to the low side between turns three and four to take the lead.

As Warner drew away, a pair of close races developed behind him. Charbonneau and Joslin continued their battle for second, while Kenny Gates and Duell were locked in a fight for fourth.

Joslin won the battle for the runner-up spot and had closed to within striking distance of the leader when the engine in his No. 49 let go with two laps remaining.

Gates and Charbonneau used evasive action to avoid Joslin’s slowed machine but ran out of time as Warner crossed under the checkers for his seventh career pro stock feature win.

Gates was second followed by Charbonneau, Luke Horning, Chucky Dumblewski, Pete Broderson, Sheldon Martin, Duell and Bill Knapp.

Racing will return to the Track of Champions next Saturday with a regular race card on tap.

Australian Peter Britten Wins First Big Block Modified Feature In The U.S.A At The Brewerton Speedway

May 9, 2011

Australian V8 Dirt Modified Champion Peter Britten behind the wheel of the Troyer, No.21A grabbed the lead on lap 6 of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified and looked to be heading to the easy win. A late charge by Billy Decker had all the fans on their feet with Britten picking up the wildly popular win by 0.824 at the checkers over Decker.

For Britten in only his third ever start at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon” by all accounts he becomes the first ever Australian Modified winner in the United States.

Other winners on K-Rock night were Alan Fink NAPA Late Models, Chris Fleming Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Tim Devendorf Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Stephen Denton picked up the win in the Metalico Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Matt Fink bolted from his front row starting spot with Ted Lamb to lead the early going of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature before a multi-car incident on the back straight saw Alan Johnson sustain the most damage ending his night.

On the restart Britten who started fifth took advantage of the restart as he grabbed the lead and immediately put distance between himself and the rest of the field, as Mike Bowman, Fink, Tony Steiner and Ryan Bartlett fought for second through fifth.

With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower, Britten was setting a blistering pace as he built up a full straightaway lead as he looked to run and hide from the rest of the pack.

On lap 15 Britten was still clicking off consistent laps, as Bowman, Mike Mahaney, Bartlett and Dale Planck were looking for anyway to cut into Britten’s lead.

The fastest car on the track was Billy Decker as he came from the consi (21st) after breaking a shock tower in his heat race showing himself in the top-five by the 16th lap.

With 10 laps to go Brtitten and Decker separated themselves from the field with Bartlett, Mahaney and defending track champion Jimmy Phelps battling for a top-five finish.

From lap 25 till starter Dave Farney threw the white flag Decker used every bit of his 46 Brewerton wins experience to harass and find a way to shake Britten into making a mistake.

On the last lap going into turn one and coming out of two, Decker got a run on Britten as the pair raced side by side down the back straight coming to the checker. Going into three they made side by side contact, but Britten didn’t flinch as he bolted off turn four to be the first under the checkers by 0.824 over Decker.

Opening night feature winner Stewart Friesen, Jimmy Phelps and Pat Ward rounded out the top-five. Mike Mahaney, Ryan Bartlett, Ryan Phelps, Mike Bowman and Ted Lamb completed the top-ten.

After doing a fist pump and roof dance in front of a wild cheering crowd Britten talked about his first ever United States win.

“I saw Billy (Decker) coming into one, and did what I had to do,” talking about the contact in three and four coming down to the checkers. The Troyer 21A it was beautiful tonight and we got it done.”

“It’s unreal, from the first race we were two-laps down, I was really disappointed about it. Now to win a race a Brewerton with Billy Decker behind me is really amazing. My parents back home are going to be so mad there not here in the moment. Big thanks to Billy Colton from Troyer, this car is just awesome.”

In one of the tightest and hard fought NAPA Late Models races of the year, Alan Fink who didn’t even run his heat because of mechanical problems grabbed the late race win. Dale Caswell, Dave Talbot, AJ Kingsley and Steven Coit rounded out the top-five.

Chris Fleming and Kevan Cook the two feature winners in 2011 were once again the class of the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds as Fleming picked up the narrow win over Cook. Brandon Carvey, Rich Keller and Josh Van Tassell finished third through fifth.

Tim Devendorf, Joe Isabell and Clayton Brewer III put on a tight battle over the entire second half of the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite Feature with Devendorf picking up the win over Isabell and Brewer. Mike Mullen and Jeff Isabell who won the B-Main rounded out the top-five.

Stephen Denton grabbed the lead on lap 2 of the 15 lap Metalico Four-Cylinder Super Stock feature and once again dominated over the entire field. Doug Elkins of Dougs Dirt Diary, Scott Rothwell, Keith Shay and Sam Curcie finished second through fifth.

This coming Friday night May 13th, WOLF Radio 105.1 will present Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, NAPA Late Models, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites, Metalico Four-Cylinder Super Stocks plus the “Finks First Loser” Modified Dash.
